The most recent issue of the highly regarded and successful series of airport publications for the international industry, AIRPORT 2007, once again covers a wide range of issues, which examine the ever-increasing challenges facing this growing industry.

In his Foreword, Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) refers to the year 2007 as being a critical turning point for the international airport industry. Having suffered over US$40 billion of losses in the last five years, profitability is now in prospect, despite an increase of US$21 billion in the industry fuel bill. To a large extent, this increase is offset by increases in labour productivity (33% since 2001) and reductions in sales, distribution and non-fuel unit costs.

More people than ever are flying and the trend is set to continue for the years ahead, underling two of the most important issues facing the industry – safety and security, and aviation’s role in climate change.

Contributors to AIRPORT 2007 include Roberto Kobeh González, President of ICAO, who highlights the opportunities for the industry flowing from the increases in traffic, while stressing the importance of managing effectively security issues. He refers, also, to the need to control gas emissions, and points out that, failing to do so could result in enough public pressure to halt the growth of air transport.

Jan van Doorn, Director, EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre (EEC) reviews current research in the TMA in light of predicted traffic growth, and the notion of Total Airport Management – a development of today’s CDM. While, Philippe Bruyere, Programme Director, IATA, covers progress that has been made in implementation of IATA’s new standard for Bar Coded Boarding Passes (BCBP), which is due to become an industry standard by 2010.

New developments in airport design feature prominently in AIRPORT 2007 which includes coverage of progress at Terminal 5, Heathrow from BAA and DSSR.

The publication contains also, features on retailing in airports, ground handling and air traffic control, as well as a range of articles on subjects likely to be of interest to senior airport and airline industry professionals worldwide.

WORLD DEFENCE SYSTEMSClick here to read more ....WORLD DEFENCE SYSTEMS

This latest issue of World Defence Systems continues the background theme of change and defence transformation with articles ranging from the role of nuclear weapons to the role of air power and aid. Change is a permanent part of defence today, both in terms of equipment and organisation and the ability for individuals to adapt to changing circumstances remains at the heart of transformation. This issue has a particular focus on counter-insurgency based on a number of case studies both historical and contemporary.

In a review by Lord Drayston of Kensington, Minister for Defence Procurement, we learn about the way ahead for defence acquisition and the new nationwide challenges to attract the right people, who can bring innovative ideas to the table. Two major initiatives, “The Competition of Ideas” and the “Grand Challenge” will encourage collaboration and innovation and help to keep the U.K. at the cutting edge of science and technology.

The challenges for the future operational concept of the RAF are discussed in an enlightening article by Wing Commander Mark Harry Kemsley, MBE. His paper reveals that at the centre of the “Future Air and Space Operational Concept” (FASOC) are the aspirations to create agile Air Power capable of meeting the challenges confronting it at all levels of war through the formation of tailored agile mission groups, which operate in a network-enabled environment for Air/Land operations.

Jeffrey A. Larsen, President of Larsen Consulting Group, reviews whether there is a future for non-strategic nuclear weapons. He believes that nuclear weapons will still probably be around in 20 years from now but maybe under a different nomenclature.

Professor Richard D Newton, Professor of Irregular Warfare at the Joint Special Operations University, looks at what defines special operations aviation and what its role should be in NATO. He comes to an interesting conclusion that defines a course that achieves parity of capability among all the special operations elements in NATO and ensures the alliance has the wherewithal to employ special operations forces as the joint force it is intended to be.

Other features include a review evaluating NATO in view of the Riga Summit, by Alexandros Papaioannou, Policy Planning Advisor at NATO, an article looking at managing change with observations from a case of military innovation in the US Marine Corps written by Dr. Terry Terriff, a Reader at the University of Birmingham and an interesting economist’s view of defence industrial strategy by Professor Keith Hartley, Director of the Centre for Defence Economics at the University of York.
