Innovation in Mental Healthcare, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: - Any Time, Any Place and Anywhere!

CCBT Limited, a Birmingham-based company, provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) treatments over the internet to sufferers of a variety of conditions including anxiety, phobias, panic disorders and depression. The company was formed in 2005 and brings together the technological expertise of Stuart Toole, who until leaving to become CEO of CCBT Ltd, was a Medici Fellow at UCE in Birmingham, with the psychological work of Professor Isaac Marks, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London - a world leader in the treatment of panic, anxiety and phobias.

Pioneering. CCBT Limited’s flagship product FearFighter™ will soon be available for patients across the UK. FearFighter™ is a groundbreaking internet application that turns any internet connected PC into a personal CBT therapist to tackle anxiety, panic and phobia. “FearFighter™ is an 8- to 12-week course of therapy delivered at home, in the office or even at a local library”, states Stuart Toole. “It ‘interviews’ and assesses an individual’s anxieties and fears, helps plan a self-treatment schedule, monitors progress and gives feedback”.

Straightforward. Once a patient is referred by a GP or a member of a local community health team, FearFighter™ is a simple and effective treatment used at the patient’s convenience and discretion, and requires a minimal amount of computer skills and support. Uniquely, the service also provides excellent feedback to the patient on their progress as well as optionally providing therapist and GPs with progress tracking and outcome measurement.

Structured. FearFighter™ consists of 9 steps that are worked through one-by-one in order to ensure the greatest benefits. Like a therapist, FearFighter™ asks patients to return each week to report on how they’re doing, and patients can print feedback and graphs of their progress. FearFighter™ guides users through the CBT process and RCT evidence demonstrates that it improves anxious/depressed patients about as much as face-to-face therapy.

To help ease access to CBT and to help overcome the shortage of CBT therapists, FearFighter™ is an easily accessible and effective solution which has been clinically accredited by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and is successfully being used by a number of Primary Care Trusts throughout the country. With the NHS legally required to fund and resource NICE Technology Appraisal recommendations, the governmentally-imposed deadline for implementing FearFighter™ by 31st March 2007 is rapidly approaching. FearFighter™ is backed by the NICE Technology Appraisal (TA097). Furthermore, an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) commissioning guidelines and a National Framework Agreement on cCBT are scheduled to be in place by late March 2007.

CCBT Limited also offer Condition Management solutions, applying the same CBT technology to support incapacity claimants wanting to return to work under the Department of Pensions Pathways to Work initiative or corporate customers wishing to provide employees with support as part of their occupational therapy portfolios.
