Sheremetyevo International Airport

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the major Russian airport. It serves more than 50% of passenger international traffic and up to 70% of all air traffic in Moscow. The throughput of two passenger terminals reaches 3500 passengers per hour.

More than 120 firms with airport activities operate on the territory of Sheremetyevo and vicinity.

More than 60 airlines operate on a regular basis in Sheremetyevo, among them such major international airlines as Aeroflot, Air France, JAT, Lot Polish Airlines, Alitalia, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Finnair, Malev, Austrian Airlines and many others.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is a Joint Stock Company, 100% owned by the state. More than 7500 people work for the airport. Sheremetyevo aerodrome has the highest category “A” and is suitable for all types of domestic and foreign aircraft.

Sergey Belyaev together with his skilled management team is in charge of the largest Russian international airport since December 2001.

The most important issues in the economic strategy of the new team are the following:

  • reformation of company’s management system with the aim to increase airport revenues
  • optimisation of technological processes and enhanced transparency and
  • controllability of business-processes by the state.

The management structure of JSC “MASH” was thoroughly reviewed. Particular importance was attached to Terminal 3 construction, as well as to the effective relationship between Russian and foreign airlines and with major Russian carrier and basic company of the airport – “Aeroflot”.

The special tender committee was created in Sheremetyevo International Airport in order to regulate the conclusion of business contracts. The tender committee arranges and hold tenders and auctions for the selection of contracting organizations.

The schedule of charter and regular flights was substantially revised. In May 2002 the airport has completely reorganized the charter program: for the first time after many years the schedule in Sheremetyevo was based on real throughput capacity of the airport. According to the new concept of scheduling the priority was given to regular carriers. Optimization of schedule led to improvements in the quality of service and reduction in waiting time for passengers on different stages of control.

The balanced program of traffic optimisation changed customs and border service procedures and prepared for reconstruction without interruption in terminals operation. JSC “MASH” management is taking steps to improve the quality of passenger service in accordance with international standards, applicable in international airports all over the world. The transformation of Sheremetyevo airport into a major hub at the head of the global Russian airport holding is the most important stage in the long-term strategy of Sheremetyevo development.

Sheremetyevo is the only Russian airport with ICAO Certificate of III A Category.

In August 2002 Sheremetyevo International Airport received ICAO Certificate of III A Category. For the first time in Russia an international airport received such certificate enabling it to accept aircraft in poor meteorological conditions.

III “А” is a first stage of the third ICAO category, which calls for landing with zero cloud ceiling and zero visibility, i.e. in conditions of zero ground visibility. In such conditions requirements to aerodrome equipment and to qualification of staff is much higher than in good weather.

The fact that the airport has received ICAO Certificate of III A Category is appreciation of the achieved success and it assigns great responsibility before airlines and passengers for the provision of flight safety in Sheremetyevo International Airport.

Quality of service improvement program

The program aimed to improve quality of passenger service is implemented step-by-step in the airport. Significant changes in airport operation took place in the shortest period of time. In particular, the improvement of passenger service quality on passport and customs control, free luggage carts, installation of video monitoring system in the airport which allows the monitoring of inbound passengers and control of different stages: landing time, docking time, time of passing through passport control, baggage claim procedures.

Quality of service improvement program implemented by the new management of JSC “MASH” calls for the gradual airport modernisation. Re-engineering of business processes and passenger traffic management will allow already in the short terms an increase in throughput capacity of the airport of 20-30%.

Results of the first half-year 2002

Balance profit has increased significantly compared with the same period in 2001. Additional revenues were obtained due to measures aimed to increase profit from non-aviation business.
