The Association maximises its effectiveness through educational activities, supporting research, engaging with other continence organisations and liaising with industry. Helping the Association to position itself clinically, professionally and politically are three Patrons who are leading figures within the UK health community. The importance of collaborative working with industry is reflected through a corporate membership of the ACA. This is by way of acknowledging the support that industry offers to those who have continence difficulties, in terms of choice and innovation, as well as the support given to the ACA at conference and at local level.

The Association was started in 1980 by a small group of pioneering healthcare professionals who acknowledged the impact incontinence could have on an individual’s quality of life. The Association now includes a wide professional membership reflecting the complexity of continence care. In order to be part of the continuing changing face of healthcare in the UK the Association endeavours to be a voice at both local and Government level.

The Association is accessible via a website www.aca.uk.com This facility provides a forum for discussion and debate and offers further educational opportunities for members.

The ACA is managed by a dedicated volunteer Executive Committee who are all full members of the ACA and are voted into position by other members. At a local level the Association has branch officers throughout the UK, who are responsible for local educational initiatives and encouraging membership. The Association is a registered charity and is run in accordance with charity law. ACA work is underpinned by annual business planning that aims to elevate its strategic position so that it can voice the concerns for continence services with confidence and authority.

Applications forms to become a member of the ACA are available from Fitwise at info@fitwise.co.uk or tel: 01506 811 077 or via the ACA website www.aca.uk.com
