In the early days car shapes were drawn on paper and put into physical property in form of hard models. In 1919, Harley Earl, who later held the first vice-presidency for styling at GM, attempted modelling with water clay. Then industrial clay was introduced. Clay modelling allowed stylists freedom of expression and interpretation, which enabled a wider scope for innovative bodywork focusing on the idea behind the design.

Today, 3d modelling is widely used as a form of expression. Due to its real-time concept verification property it enables fast “focusing on image and emotional feeling” but also requires skilled management and resources throughout complex concept car development phases.
