ANA is a residential treatment centre for people who wish to live a life free from reliance on drugs and alcohol.
ANA was founded in 1998. Over the past eight years, the organisation has grown to offer forty one beds, primary and secondary treatment, detoxification, after care, family and carers groups and training on all aspects of drug and alcohol treatment and service provision.
ANA offers a twelve week abstinence based primary treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction. In addition we offer individually tailored detoxification programmes. Our aim is to help our clients rebuild their lives, to gain in confidence and self-worth and to really believe that they can live a healthy, responsible and productive life, free of addictive substances.

Our Programme is modular, flexible and features increasing levels of choice and opportunities for personal development as client’s progress through. We recognise that every client has different needs and will move individually through treatment and into recovery.
ANA facilitates recovery through support and respect, working in collaboration with our clients. Care planning, group work and one to one key worker sessions all feature, together with a life skills programme, women & men’ groups, alternative therapies and optional secondary programme. Our programme combines a number of philosophies including the Twelve Step approach and in non-denominational in nature.
ANA is situated in Southsea City Centre so our programme enables our clients to experience life without drugs/alcohol in an everyday setting that is pro-actively geared to fully protect them at all times. ANA welcomes clients from all backgrounds and walks of life.
See Figure 1 for a simple explanation of our modular treatment structure.
This system is in place to provide clients with individual, specific and continuous support from one person.
A key worker is allocated to the client on arrival as part of a preliminary assessment which identifies his/her individual needs. An initial care plan is prepared by the allocated key worker in consultation with the therapeutic team and client. This is updated regularly as treatment progresses.
The Key Worker will always be aware of their clients work and progress and will check in with the client on a daily bases to ensure there are no problems that the treatment teams are unaware of.
Clients meet with their key worker on a regular basis for one to one sessions that review progress and inform treatment and care plans
Key workers act as a central point of contact for care managers, next of kin and others associated with the client
This aspect of treatment runs throughout ANA Primary and Secondary treatment. It provides clients with the opportunity to develop the skills needed to function without reliance on substances, in society as part of a community.
The life skills programme is incremental in content and runs from simple to complex in parallel with an individual client’s recovery.
Examples of some of the areas that the programme focuses on are:
ANA also works with other agencies to assist with some of the above.
ANA offers a weekly group which is available to family and carers. The impact of living with a loved one who is addicted to alcohol or drugs can be devastating and frightening for family and partners.
At ANA we help family members and partners gain an understanding and awareness of addiction. We encourage group members to identify how they have been affected by someone else’s behaviour and explore new responses and changes that could be made.
Many family members and partners have denied their own emotional and physical needs as they have become caught up with the needs of their loved one. As a result they sometimes feel betrayed, undervalued and life can be very difficult.
This service aims to support family and carers in overcoming difficulties and leading healthy, rewarding and productive lives with all family members and friends.
This is an open meeting and all are welcome.
Our motto reflects our environment and our services.
ANA Treatment Centres are located in Southsea in Hampshire. Southsea is the southern most area in Portsmouth and includes the majority of the coastline, seafront, common and parks.
The urban nature of the location requires clients to deal with the reality of being in a busy town on a regular basis. This has been a deliberate strategy on ANA’s part to facilitate recovery and develop life skills with clients in a place not too far removed from what they have previously had to deal with. The main difference is that, at ANA, abstinence is an essential requirement.
One of ANA’s core aims is to equip clients with the confidence, knowledge and life skills needed to live a life free from dependence on drugs or alcohol in the real world. ANA believes that one of the most effective ways of doing this is to ensure that clients remain in a safe, supported but realistic environment whilst they progress their recovery.
Many ANA clients have a proven track record of success in recovery because of this approach. Following treatment, many clients find it difficult to function upon return to their lives and familiar places due to familiar sights, sounds, people and temptations. ANA seeks to minimise the likelihood of relapse by supporting clients to deal with these realities throughout treatment by moving between locations daily and not leave it all to the client once treatment has been completed. Hence, "treatment in the real world."
Treatment at ANA is based on an eclectic mix of best practice, underpinned by a twelve step, non-denominational philosophy.
Due to the urban environment, clients do experience temptations on a daily basis when they move, accompanied, between ANA residential and treatment centres. Treatment modules and the ANA therapeutic structure supports clients to discuss those temptations and experiences, as they occur, on a daily basis. This can occur in peer group sessions, in one to ones with their key worker and in daily contact with peers, councillors and support staff.
This support, combined with exposure to the realities of life and a safe environment, provides clients with the confidence and experience to build strategies to maintain recovery and avoid relapse.
All clients have different triggers that need to be identified, accepted and then managed. From a bill-board advertisement through walking past a public house and passing people in the street, these triggers are everywhere is a busy urban environment. Treatment at ANA supports clients to deal with them whilst in recovery and not leave it until afterwards. Hence, "treatment in the real world."
