Ansaldo Nucleare S.p.A., part of the Finmeccanica Group as joint-stock company with single shareholder Ansaldo Energia S.p.A., is the Italian leading company in the nuclear engineering business.

BUSINESS

Ansaldo Nucleare's specific mission is to promote, develop and support the worldwide civil nuclear industry. Its business activities include promotion, sales, project management, design, engineering, contracting, fabrication, site implementation, plants start-up and assistance.

The core business of Ansaldo Nucleare is based on the three key strands of its strategy:

• Design and construction of new power plants
• Operating assistance and services for nuclear power plants
• Supply of radioactive waste treatment systems and decommissioning

The Company is at the forefront of studies and research for nuclear plants of the next generation embodying a high degree of inherent and passive safety such as AP1000 and EPP reactors, as well as the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for transmutation of long lived radioactive waste, fast breeder reactors and fusion systems.

Specific activities encompass design and supply of main components for nuclear reactors, fuel handling equipment and radioactive waste systems.

The most significant events in the recent period have been the completion of Cernavoda Unit 2 in Romania - at present in commercial operation - and the conclusion of a major agreement with Westinghouse Electric Co. for the design and supply of innovative components to be installed at Sanmen NPP, the first nuclear power plant of a new generation to be built in China.

CLIENTS

Major clients are super national entities (European Commission, EBRD, EURATOM), nuclear safety authorities and national organizations, nuclear-electric operators (ENEL Produzione, EDF, SOGIN, Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica, Nucleoelectrica Argentina, ENERGOATOM, Nuklearna Elektrarna Krsko), leading nuclear industry participants (Westinghouse Electric, GE-Hitachi, Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion, SIET, Tractebel, Nukem GmbH), research institutes as well as high-technology industry companies and consortia (ITER, European Space Agency, FGUP).

 

RESOURCES

Originally created in 1989 as an independent branch inside the FINMECCANICA Group, Ansaldo Nucleare collected skilled and experienced resources from the formerly existing companies Ansaldo Meccanico Nucleare S.p.A. and NIRA - Nucleare Italiana Reattori Avanzati S.p.A.

The Company presently relies on a stable work force of about 180 employed experts and several sub-contracted specialists (mainly involved in site activities).

More than 130 technicians carry out Design, Analysis and Engineering tasks (system, equipment and structural design, safety, reliability and radiation analysis, instrumentation/ control and electrical systems, fluid-mechanical and thermal-hydraulic analysis, integrated plant engineering and simulation.

About 50 of our managers and employees are involved in project implementation activities (Sales, Project & Construction Management, Procurement, Quality Management, Information Technology, and Administration).

CERTIFICATION

Ansaldo Nucleare, in order to enforce its quality policy, has established and periodically reviews and updates, a Quality and HSE Systems certified in compliance with the requirements of the International Standards ISO 9001/2000 and ISO 14001.

Ansaldo Nucleare also possesses ASME N, NS Certificates.

Ansaldo Nucleare is based in Genoa, N-W Italy, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Abroad, Ansaldo Nucleare has offices in Moscow and Bucharest. Additional worldwide support in about 20 countries is granted by Ansaldo Energia local offices.
