AUTO China
The Official Review of Automotive Technology For China
A Publication Co-published by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Sovereign Publications
Edited by Michael Scarlett
OVERVIEW

Most automotive suppliers know that the Chinese automotive industry offers great potential for Western companies, but finite internal resources and a fear of the unknown has prevented many of them from pursuing these opportunities. This is unfortunate, because what is at stake is their company’s success – perhaps even their survival – in the Global marketplace. If an ever-increasing number of its customers and competitors are already in China capitalizing on the opportunities that exist how long can a company wait to enter this highly lucrative market?

Chinese vehicle sales have grown at an annual rate of more than 22% over the last 10 years, making China the fastest growing automotive market in the world. Domestic companies in China are getting stronger and are starting to compete worldwide, especially in the developing countries. Chery is expected to sell cars in America in late 2007. In 2005, the volume of cars China exported exceeded imports for the first time. Chinas export of finished sedan cars (including CKD) grew rapidly during the first six months of 2005, with the total number of exports hitting a record of 9,600. This was an increase of 183 percent over the same period of the previous year, according to latest statistics from the Department of Import and Export of Electromechanical Products, the Ministry of Commerce. Most exported cars are economical models such as Chery, Xiali, Geely and Lobo.

China’s biggest selling points are its enormous revenue potential for Western companies facing over-saturated and fiercely competitive domestic markets and potential for growth. As one of the key industries that the Chinese government aims to develop, the import tariff on automotive systems and components has been reduced as of January 1st 2006 to an average of just 10%. This in combination with Chinas entry into the WTO means that there will be tremendous business opportunities for foreign companies who are already established in China as well as new entrants to the market.

However, despite the great promise of the Chinese automotive industry both in terms of current market size and future growth potential, Western companies have found great difficulty gaining access to this market and dealing with Chinese government bodies and the country’s automotive companies. In response to this, to assist foreign companies who are interested in gaining access to this huge market and to provide a link between Western suppliers and China’s automotive companies, The Chinese Council For The Promotion Of International Trade (CCPIT) in association with Sovereign Publications will be publishing AUTO China.

AUTO China will be published in Mandarin (Chinese) and will examine all aspects of automotive technology as applied specifically to the Chinese market. The publication will include editorial contributions from the Worlds leading automakers and Western Suppliers, thereby providing senior technical and purchasing professionals, and “C” level executives within the regions OEMs and 1st and 2nd Tier Suppliers with an invaluable insight into advanced Western technology. The publication will explore how these technologies can be utilised by the Chinese Automakers and their suppliers to win market share both in their rapidly growing domestic market and overseas.
