The Automotive Academy promotes globally competitive standards of
training and skill development
for the UK's automotive industry. Set
up with the backing of £12 million of Government funds through the Department
for Trade and Industry, the Academy supports the UK automotive industry by
boosting skills in engineering and manufacturing, amid growing international
competition.
The Academy recognises that in order to stay competitive, Britain’s vehicle and component industry needs a highly skilled workforce committed to better working practices, the elimination of waste and the achievement of internationally accepted levels of quality. Skills training is the key to future prosperity of the UK automotive industry. To stay competitive in the global market, manufacturers must have a culture of continuous learning, and skills acquisition and development.
Automotive manufacturing in the UK is about much more than the vehicle manufacturers. It comprises over 3000 businesses of all sizes in the supply chain. The Automotive Academy works alongside industry developing the highest quality, relevant training tailored to business needs – from large Vehicle Manufacturers to SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises), at all levels within a company - from shop floor to boardroom.
As the national centre for learning for people in the automotive industry,
the Academy has its hub in Birmingham and a rapidly expanding network of
regional spokes whose remit is to improve the skills base in their local area,
providing a one-stop shop contact to help companies with their training and
funding requirements.
It sets a national curriculum and then brings together training and funding providers to give companies and individuals access to globally competitive skills development. The Academy isn’t a deliverer of courses but guarantees that standards are met, by ensuring all course content and material, training providers and assessors meet its stringent validation criteria.
The Academy’s Core Curriculum focuses on Quality, Cost and Delivery improvements throughout the company structure. It includes one and two day Introduction to Lean short courses, Business Improvement Techniques at NVQ level 2 and level 3 for shop floor floor level, and a Team Leader programme at level 3 for supervisors. It also recognises the need for training at boardroom level and provides Executives in companies of all sizes in the supply chain with opportunities for personal and business improvement - whether it be at Masters degree level or through distance learning on the Academy Business Executive Support Programme.
