BISHOP STEERING TECHNOLOGY

Bishop Steering Technology is a member of the Bishop Technology Group and is a leading innovation company. Bishop is at the forefront of research & development, primarily in the automotive industry.

Bishop Steering Technology markets, supplies and supports leading edge steering technology worldwide. With offices servicing Europe, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, Bishop offers original equipment, manufacturers and component suppliers integrated product and manufacturing solutions.

Bishop’s success is a result of the group’s ability to predict and to remain ahead of an ever-changing market and the company owns over 300 patents and patent applications worldwide.

In technical innovation the idea is only the beginning. To take that idea and refine it as a viable engineered product in the competitive world market place is the real challenge.

Bishop Steering Technology meets this challenge every day. Bishop is recognised around the world as a successful innovator in automotive steering, from concept development and engineering design, through to marketing and intellectual property protection, drawing on more than 40 years’ experience. Bishop’s in depth research and development capabilities help provide manufacturers with superior product performance at minimum production cost.

Testament to Bishop’s technology and its success is its use in over 20% of passenger vehicles produced globally each year.

Bishop works across, and closely with, all facets of the automotive industry ranging from OEM’s to steering gear suppliers, component manufacturers to F1 racing, providing them with profitable engineering solutions.

Bishop is unique as a creator of componentry and associated manufacturing methods, without itself being a manufacturer. Bishop devotes the same priority to developing and perfecting process machinery as it does to the original component. This ensures a high level of support to the licensed manufacturer. Design, research and prototype testing are all geared to market viability ensuring superior product performance at minimum production cost.

Some of Bishop’s latest technology developments include an award winning warm forging process to manufacture both constant and variable ratio steering gear racks. This technology has won numerous engineering and technology awards in Australia and most recently, the 2003 Automotive News PACE Award in the USA. It is this technology that formed the basis of a joint venture between Bishop Steering Technology and Mercedes-Benz Lenkungen called BMB Steering Innovation GmbH located in Schoenebeck, Germany. BMB Steering Innovation was established in 1998 and has just installed the third warm forging cell in its facility to keep up with demand.

In addition to the warm forging technology, other Bishop inventions include variable ratio steering technology, engine technology and optical torque sensing – to cite just a few.

The Bishop Torque and Angle Sensor (BTAS) is now nearing production capability and will provide unique measurement of torque, angle and rate of change. This system is very compatible with steer-by-wire technology being developed. BTAS technology is likely to become a world standard in automotive production.
