Bloom
Engineering, an international leader in the supply of combustion equipment,
supports customers through headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Worldwide
sales and service is provided by wholly owned subsidiaries operating in
Europe, a Chinese joint venture, and licensed partners and representatives.
The Bloom family of companies specializes in problem solving through custom
engineering rather than through a “catalog sales” approach. Bloom has gained
a worldwide reputation for quality products, supported by first-class
engineering and application expertise.
Bloom serves basic industry with particularly strong roots in steel and aluminum. Over forty years ago, Bloom pioneered the unique baffle burner concept. The baffle provides support to the burner fuel nozzle while shielding the burner internals from flame radiation. Baffle hole and port geometries determine flame characteristics such as shape and luminosity. Bloom burners use air staging and internal exhaust gas recirculation to suppress NOx production.

Additional products include controls, valves, prefabricated pipe racks, ladle and tundish drying and heating stations, and related combustion equipment. Repair, maintenance, burner upgrade and equipment remanufacturing services are also offered by Bloom. Bloom also offers qualified personnel for combustion tuning, training seminars and energy audits.
Most of the world recognizes the importance of reducing NOx emissions. Although most of Bloom’s original burners were inherently low NOx designs, modifications have lowered emissions even further. With the development of regenerative burners, Bloom’s low NOx innovations successfully solved the challenges presented by this technology’s high air preheat temperatures. The extremely high thermal efficiency of a regenerative system offers the best offset available to escalating fuel costs. An additional and increasingly important benefit, high regenerative efficiency cuts CO2 emissions, a greenhouse gas, in direct proportion to energy usage reductions when firing fossil fuels.
Bloom’s
extensive research and development complex provides diversity and support to
the core business. Bloom’s technology originates in a 10,000 square foot
research and development facility housing over 20 fully instrumented
furnaces. Degree-holding engineers and full time technicians staff the
laboratory. Bloom has over 10 years experience with computational fluid
dynamics and successfully applies modeling results to internal burner
development projects. CFD is also used for studies on customer furnaces for
modeling flame patterns, NOx generation, and burner location to
optimize heat transfer for the process. Bloom demands that burner
innovations reach the market with uncompromised thermal performance, low
emissions and the ability to use a wide range of liquid and gaseous fuels.
As a result of emphasizing technology, Bloom has met every NOx
performance guarantee issued, a claim matched by few, if any, other
manufacturers.
Bloom’s low NOx product line spans the capacity range commonly used in industrial applications. It includes direct and radiant tube fired burners designed for cold air or hot air produced by recuperators or regenerators. Bloom’s products for air heaters, thermal oxidizers and boilers rank among the lowest NOx producers available. Flare stack and other specialty burners round-out Bloom’s burner product line.
