Boehringer Ingelheim in brief

Boehringer Ingelheim is the largest family-owned healthcare company in the world. Our headquarters are in Ingelheim, Germany.

We were founded in 1885 and descendants of the original founder own the company today.

In the early days the company concentrated much of its business in cream of tartar, used to make baking powder and sold to fizzy drinks companies.

In the 20th Century, Boehringer Ingelheim began to extract morphine from opium and cocaine from cocoa leaves for use in products. Many of the products launched since the turn of the century are still available on the market.

Today we have a particularly interest in the fields of respiratory, cardiovascular medicine, HIV, stroke prevention, palliative care, oncology, animal health and consumer healthcare.

Boehringer Ingelheim UK

In 1948 the first Boehringer Ingelheim product was introduced to the market. This was a respiratory drug, a bronchodilator called Aludrin, which hailed the reputation we have today as a respiratory house.

Boehringer Ingelheim UK was established in 1962. Our first offices were at Isleworth close to London. The company grew quickly and we moved to Bracknell in 1972.

The UK company today concentrates much of its activity in research and development, undertaking clinical trials and obtaining licences for the numerous products we produce.

Prescription Medicine

The biggest UK division is responsible for marketing the company's prescription medicines to GPs, hospitals and pharmacists. Our products are among the leaders used to treat respiratory disease, cerebravascular disease, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, HIV/AIDS and cancer.

Animal Health

Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica was founded in 1980 and is now the fastest growing division within the company. The division specialises in the fields of pets and farm animals.

Consumer Health Care

The Consumer Healthcare division has many well-established brands, such as Pharmaton, Antistax and Dulcolax (laxative).

Technology and Pharmaceutical Manufacture

Boehringer Ingelheim UK is the centre for the world production of sterile Unit Dose Vials (UDVs) and has developed state-of-the-art methods in this area.

In the past years we have remained convinced that the key to our success, and success in the pharmaceutical industry, is to launch products that represent a high level of therapeutic progress.

We have an ongoing programme of research & development with research facilities in 10 countries and production plants in more than 20.

In 2003 we spent over 15% of our net sales on research and development.

New product launches have accounted for a great deal of our business growth and this will continue well into the future.

We have a particular interest in the fields of respiratory and cardiovascular care, HIV and animal health and are constantly striving for innovative treatments that will improve quality of patient care.
