Partners
Senior Partner: Bruce Burt (BA LLB) (Attorney, notary and conveyancer)

Bruce has represented clients locally and internationally on commercial and other matters. He has been involved in listing companies on the JSE Securities Exchange as well as in restructuring companies in liquidation, and in securing and obtaining banking licences in South Africa for foreign clients.

Bruce’s specialist areas are:

negotiating and drafting agreements for mergers, acquisitions, structured finance, and cross-border contracts
conducting corporate forensic enquiries and investigations
interpreting and reporting on financial statements and structures
establishing and implementing corporate structures and Competition Commission applications
obtaining Securities Regulation Panel approval

Bruce was admitted as an attorney in 1974, and as a Notary and a Conveyancer in 1976. In 1988 he founded B J R Burt Attorneys; in 2000 the name changed to Burt Meaden Attorneys.
Bruce has BA and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa).

Richard Meaden (BA LLB):

Richard's practice primarily consists of superior and lower court litigation with a special emphasis on commercial and civil matters. Richard is experienced in a wide range of litigation and arbitration, both in South Africa and internationally.

He was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in January 1995 and became a partner with the firm in 1996.

Richard has BA and LLB degrees (Rhodes University, South Africa) as well as a post-graduate diploma in Maritime Law (University of Natal, South Africa) and a higher diploma in Advanced Company Law (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa).

Candice Burt (BA LLB):

Candice is an expert in the emerging field of producing legal documents in plain English. Her practice focuses on financial services contracts, including banking, security and insurance contracts. As an accredited trainer and facilitator, Candice also offers a facilitation service to clients.

Before becoming a partner at Burt Meaden Attorneys in 2001, Candice practiced at a solicitor’s firm in London. Clients included large corporations and multinationals.

Candice has BA and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). She was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1997.

Staff

Burt Meaden Attorneys has five qualified attorneys, three candidate attorneys and a conveyancing paralegal. The firm has a policy of nurturing its staff by encouraging them to develop in their chosen areas of interest.
