Ceradyne, Inc. develops and manufactures advanced technical ceramic products and components based on silicon nitride, boron carbide, silicon carbide and aluminum nitride. These materials are manufactured into components for automotive, defense, industrial and medical applications. Advanced technical ceramics offer considerable advantages over standard but less durable materials, such as metals and plastics, because of their lightweight, temperature resistant, wear resistant, and electrical insulating qualities. Ceradyne Inc. has manufacturing locations throughout the US.

Ceradyne recently acquired two new businesses; Quest Technology LP based in San Diego, California and ESK Ceramics GmbH & Co. KG based in Kempten, Germany. These two companies add complimentary products in a number of industrial, engineering, electronic and medical areas, some of which widen Ceradyne’s portfolio of products and solutions for automotive applications.

ESK’s EKagrip® Nickel Diamond Coatings can be applied to joint components directly, or to thin foils or shims.

ESK Ceramics provides advanced material and component solutions based upon boron carbide, silicon carbide, boron nitride, silicon nitride, calcium boride, titanium boride, zirconium boride, and nickel diamond frictional coatings. Automotive applications include: EKasic® Silicon Carbide water pump seal faces used in heavy-duty diesel engines; EKagrip® nickel diamond high friction coatings used at joints in powertrain, transmission, suspension and drive applications; and EKatherm® silicon nitride for the manufacture of Aluminum Alloy casting components.

Ceradyne Quest Technology specializes in ceramic injection molded components with complex geometries, close tolerances, hardness, toughness, and precision replication.

Ceradyne Automotive Applications

Ceradyne, Inc. is a Tier 2 supplier of selected components to the diesel engine industry.

Ceradyne, Inc. Diesel Engine Components and Rolling Elements

Ceradyne’s Ceralloy® 147-31N silicon nitride is used to produce cam rollers for heavy-duty diesel engines, and rollers for high-pressure fuel pumps for light duty and heavy duty diesel engine applications. These silicon nitride components eliminate the micro welding and galling problems observed with metal components when used under very high contact stresses, and results in increased component reliability and reduced warranty costs. Ceradyne supplies around two million components annually to major engine and fuel pump manufacturers in the USA and Europe.

This same silicon nitride is used to produce the roller or ball elements of hybrid roller and ball bearings for high performance machine tool and electrical applications where the high stiffness and electrical insulating qualities offer distinct technological advantages. Silicon nitride based hybrid roller bearings are also used by several teams in Formula 1 racing applications.

Defense Applications

Ceradyne is a fully integrated Tier 1 supplier of lightweight ceramic-composite armor systems to both military and commercial customers. Capabilities include designing, manufacturing, assembling and testing systems.

Ceradyne, Inc. Lightweight Ceramic Armor Protection

Armor systems are manufactured by combining composites such as Kevlar®, SpectraShield® and Dyneema® with boron carbide, silicon carbide, silicon nitride or titanium diboride that defeat NIJ Level 3A and Level 4 threats. The lightweight ceramics based systems are particularly effective against 5.56mm, 7.62mm and 12.7mm high velocity armor piercing threats. These lightweight armor systems are used in attack and transport helicopters, transport aircraft, body armor particularly for the US military, and protective seats for HMMWV high mobility vehicles. Ceradyne also provides armor to a USA based manufacturer of luxury armored limousines.
