Christy Aerospace & Technology Ltd (formerly Christy Military Flying Training Ltd) are a Group of Companies comprising Christy Aerospace & Technology Ltd, Christy Defence Flying Training Ltd and Christy Research & Development Ltd. The Group was formed in October 2007 to both accommodate the organisation’s expansion and to allow focus on distinct areas of the business: namely, specialist consultancy support; training manpower provision and management of fleet upgrade/re-life; and development and delivery of highly innovative training software.
In 2005, the Company successfully delivered its first major software product, a Hawk technical training package (courseware), to RAF Valley, which is based upon their unique software engine. A high level of 2D and 3D interactivity is provided that allows the student to be either taught in the instructor-led environment or to conduct his own training to consolidate lessons learnt in the classroom. The software requires no specialist hardware and runs reliably on both standard desktop and laptop PCs. Since delivery, it has been 100% reliable and has either met or exceeded all of its functional contractual targets. It can readily be adapted to represent any aircraft type.
2007 saw the roll-out of our latest product, the Virtual Cockpit Trainer (VCT™) suite. Predominantly software-based, VCT™ will revolutionise the approach to aircrew training, providing a substantially greater level of realism than was previously possible within the constraints of the desktop environment, but only at low-cost to the user. Key features of this desktop simulation device are its high definition cockpit and instrumentation, coupled with an accurate full flight model, specific to the aircraft type that is being simulated. However, it also features a full environment model and inclusion of a high-definition terrain database. To maximise training realism, joystick support is included, which also permits stick feedback mechanism (i.e. out of trim forces, buffet). Probably most relevant in this age, is the full simulation of glass cockpit avionics. This provides the facility for a student to learn and rehearse kit-handling in different syllabus events, thus effectively downloading training from more expensive mediums. The software can readily be expanded to a multi-display system, and also provides I/O capability to allow for additional hardware to be incorporated.
VCT™ can be distributed on standard PCs to all students on a course and therefore permits unlimited access, unlike traditional training devices. It is also easily upgradeable and therefore need never be out of date with the aircraft. Furthermore, rapid delivery timeframes also mean that the software can be brought into service ahead of aircraft type to enhance conversion training. The simulation of modern glass cockpit avionics equipment is an extremely valuable and unique training tool. It allows syllabus development to commence at a much earlier stage than was previously possible, thus reducing costs and risk during the transition phase to a new aircraft type. For organisations that cannot afford state of the art full mission simulators, it can effectively supplement (or even replace) legacy training devices and, amongst other capabilities, provides a realistic emergency training and instrument flying practice environment.
Training software is only one element of the Company’s core activities. As Aerospace consultants, the Group is uniquely qualified to advise and assist with all aspects of flying training, simulation, ground-based training, PFI/PPP, financial/investment appraisals, aircraft selection programs, airfield/airspace management, estate rationalisation and basing plans. Included is our knowledge of changes of use of ex-military airfields and dealing with planning issues to facilitate successful transition to civilian ownership.
With a unique blend of experience from both the public and private sector, gained during the past 20 years, which includes experience of several successful PFI projects, Christy Aerospace & Technology has the capability to provide invaluable advice within the flying training sector to both government bodies and commercial organisations.
