COGEN EUROPE

COGEN Europe is the European Association for the promotion of cogeneration. It was created in 1993 to reflect the clear need for greater co-operative efforts at a European level to realise the full potential for cogeneration.

WHAT IS COGENERATION?

Cogeneration is the most efficient way to deliver heating, cooling and electricity. It is based on the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used. The central and most fundamental principle of cogeneration is that, in order to maximise the many benefits that arise from it, systems should be based according to the heat demand of the application.

The use of cogeneration results in win-win solutions to energy problems facing today’s societies!

• Liberalisation of Europe’s energy market;

• Delivering the EU commitment to doubling cogeneration in 10 years;
• Ensuring fair treatment of cogeneration in the Climate Change flexibility mechanisms.

Promoting the benefits and potential of cogeneration

This key area of our activity involves:

• Dissemination of information relating to cogeneration and market developments;

• Development of national promotional organisations for cogeneration;

• A wide variety of promotional activities including the cogeneration industry’s annual high level policy conference in Brussels.

Research and publications

We undertake a range of research projects working closely with a number of funding bodies and industry partners. The results of these studies we publish. From COGEN Europe you can receive the following:

• Policy reports which include quantifying the potential for cogeneration in Europe and elsewhere;

THE COGEN NETWORK

The successful development of cogeneration demands co-operation between a range of different actors – equipment suppliers, fuel and heat suppliers, policy makers, energy users, electricity utilities and financiers. COGEN Europe aims to involve all of these and other relevant groups in its activities. It is backed by two categories of membership:

• National Members – national promotional organisations for cogeneration, which have a principal objective to promote the use of cogeneration in their country.
• Members – individual companies or organisations, which have an interest in the wider use of cogeneration.

Our network covers the whole of the European Union, Central and Eastern Europe, and includes Japan, Australia and the United States. We are actively supporting our members in their development of cogeneration markets throughout the world.
