Cummins – powering diesel technology ahead |
![]() |
Cummins
has been at the forefront of military power applications for over 50 years.
Indeed, Cummins is the largest supplier of diesels for defence purposes in
the Western world, with up to 250,000 engines in military and naval service.
Under the most demanding operational conditions Cummins engines have
acquired a battle proven reputation for ruggedness and dependability. On
both land and sea they have provided that vital edge in speed and power,
essential to success. Away from the front line, in logistical support for
example, Cummins engines are well recognised for outstanding fuel-efficiency
and durability.
Cummins
engine range extends all the way from a compact 3.3 litre to a mighty 60
litre diesel - covering the 40 to 2,700 hp power band. Premium power is
available for almost every type of application, from AFVs to high mobility
vehicles, logistical trucks, fast patrol boats, combat engineering
equipment, generator sets and more.
With
every Cummins engine comes the added benefit of in-depth application
engineering to ensure a perfect power match. Ultra-low profile Cummins
powerpacks are utilised in main battle assets such as the VSEL AS90
self-propelled howitzer and Bradley heavy AFV, while custom-engineered power
for the MRLS self-propelled rocket launcher has proved a major success.
For
the latest generation of lighter AFVs currently being developed, Cummins
offers the inherent advantage of high power-to-weight performance for added
mobility. Repowers are also a key area of Cummins expertise, represented by
a major dieselisation programme now underway for the UK MoD for the Alvis
CVR(T)family which includes the Scorpion light tank.
In
the key 135 to 640 ps power sector, Cummins has recently introduced a range
of new 3.9 to 15 litre engines. The ISB, ISC, ISL, ISM and ISX will provide
a new level of capability for all types of AFVs and military trucks. At the
heart of these new engines is Cummins highly sophisticated INTERACT
electronic engine platform. INTERACT provides the capability for fully
electronically integrated drivelines, reaching out from the engine
management functions to link with the vehicle transmission, braking and
traction systems.
Significantly, all INTERACT engines are available with integrated engine braking. This feature offers rapid reaction braking without the give-way thermal signature associated with service brakes.
Cummins reported record world-wide sales of $6.6 billion (US dollars) in 1999, confirming the company’s position as the world’s leading diesel engine company. Cummins longstanding position as the largest manufacturer of diesel engines over 200 hp, has recently been enhanced by also achieving number one position for manufacturing diesels over 50 hp. This level of sales success allows Cummins to make the investment necessary to maintain its leadership in diesel engine technology, with some £250 million invested annually in research and engineering.
From a corporate base in Columbus, Indiana USA, Cummins has evolved Into a global engine supplier with major manufacturing operations located around the world. Customers also have access to the most comprehensive service support network in the diesel engine industry, with a Cummins network spanning some 5,000 locations. This capability equips the company with a unique degree of international expertise in defence applications.
