Established in 1972, David M. Cannell & Associates, Corporate Partners of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects have designed many commercial and military vessels operating worldwide.

One major success story for the British company involves the United States Coastguard who in 1996 selected a design by DMC&A to be their new 26 metre Coastal Patrol Boat in a contract for 50 vessels, the largest contract worldwide for vessels of that size. The vessels are built by Bollinger Shipyards.

The Coastguard subsequently recently extended the contract, ordering 14 additional “Marine Protector” class vessels as they are called. A further 8 vessels ordered in 2007 brings the total to 75 including two vessels for the Maltese Coastguard.

The Coastguard were particularly impressed with DMC&A’s unique daughter vessel launch and recovery system which allows launch and recovery operations in up to Sea State 5, and the general arrangements of the vessel which DMC&A created to meet all the many and detailed requirements of the Coastguard.

The daughter vessel system was originally developed by DMC&A as a part of their design for a 23.5 metre, 27 knot Sea Fisheries Patrol Vessel operating in the North Sea, “ESF Protector III”. Operational speeds of over 25 knots can be maintained in comfort in poor weather thanks to the excellent seakeeping qualities of DMC&A’s hull design, optimised in a model testing programme.

The range of commercial and military vessels designed by DMC&A also includes 14, 16, 18 and 26-30m patrol vessels capable of operating in adverse conditions and with maximum speeds approaching 40 knots.

The company also regularly surveys vessels and oversees newbuildings. The experience gained from those activities transfers through to the design office, enhancing the through-life performance, maintainability and reliability of DMC&A’s vessels.

DMC&A has long experience with advanced composite structures as well as steel and aluminium alloy vessels, including Surface Effect Ships and Submersibles.

DMC&A act regularly as Expert Witness and Arbitrator/Mediator. Cases have involved advising Courts on defects in the FRP construction of the decks of a series of Offshore Patrol Vessels, advice on collisions and damage repairs to steel and aluminium alloy vessels as well as contract performance disputes.
