The Droitwich Knee Clinic

The Droitwich Knee Clinic was established in 1988 as a specialist centre for the diagnosis and treatment of knee disorders under the directorship of Mr. Angus Strover FRCS. In 1997 the demand for these services required the addition of the London Knee Clinic.

Our core business is the treatment of knee conditions in all age groups. We employ five orthopaedic surgeons, a sports physician, two chartered physiotherapists and two nurses. Altogether we have treated over 12,500 patients.

Beside the treatment the Clinics provide, we use a network of physiotherapists, sports therapists, sports physicians and general practitioners who regularly refer their patients for diagnosis and treatment and who co-operate with us in the post operative treatment of their patients.

On-site special investigations used in diagnosis include MRI scanning, X-ray and ultrasound imaging, electrocardiograms, isokinetic testing and comprehensive laboratory back-up. This gives the patient a unique "one stop" diagnosis thus avoiding the need for recurrent consultations before a final diagnosis is made.

Urgent cases can usually be accommodated within 24 hours. Elective surgery such as ligament reconstructions, knee replacements and osteotomies can be given a firm booking at the time of the initial diagnosis. Our waiting time for initial consultation is usually less than 2 weeks. Should subsequently surgery be necessary we aim to accommodate patients within two weeks.

Patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery are accommodated either as day surgery cases, or an overnight stay in hospital, depending on the needs of the patient.

Those who are undergoing total knee replacements are discharged from hospital within 7 and 10 days of their operations.

Many of our patients come from the Channel Islands, Europe, the Middle East, the North of England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. There are no boundaries to our areas of referral.

In all cases an accurate estimation of total costs of the operation, including the hospital costs, the anaesthetist’s and surgeon’s fees and an estimate of the costs of rehabilitation and follow-up appointments will be given on request by our accounts department.

Our particular areas of surgical expertise are the following:

  • Repair of menisci (semilunar cartilages). Repair rather than unnecessary removal preserves and protects the knee from wear and tear in the active individual. Meniscal Transplants from human donors cryopreserved and carefully screened for viral contaminants. We are the only centre in the U.K. offering this service at present.
  • Ligament reconstructions of the knee using minimally invasive autogenous grafting techniques requiring overnight hospitalisation.
  • Various patella realignment procedures specifically chosen for the patient with a mal-tracking or recurrent dislocation of the patella.
  • Repair of joint surface cartilage defects using autologous cartilage cell implantation techniques (ACI).
  • The comprehensive investigation and treatment of anterior knee pain. We pride ourselves in curing at least 70% of patients with this problem.
  • Osteotomies and limb realignment where indicated
  • Limb reconstruction using the Sheffield modification of the Ilizarov external frame, for those with serious non-unions, malunions and congenital deformities of the lower limb
  • Primary and revision unicompartmental and total knee replacement.
The Droitwich Knee Clinic is recognised as an international teaching centre by ISAKOS (the International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine).

As a group of experts in our chosen field, we believe that we can offer a unique service to the professional or amateur sportsman, the athlete with a knee injury and the middle aged or older person with degenerative conditions of the knee.
