Innovative technique for in-house recycling of reject aluminium engine blocks
Dross Engineering UK

Dross Engineering, a Franco-British company with a vocation to design furnaces and foundry equipment specifically developed to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of processing and recycling non-ferrous metals have identified a particularly innovative role for their equipment in the automotive foundry industry:

The problem…
Current engine technology calls for a growing number of aluminium engine blocks and similar components with 'cast-in' iron liners or steel inserts and although foundries aim to reduce to a minimum any process rejects, the target of 'zero scrap' remains unfeasible. Therefore, diecasters are faced with a major problem when it comes to in-house recycling of such reject components.

Present solutions…
Limited alternatives are presently available to de-iron and recover the valuable aluminium alloy:

  1. Melting on a dry hearth. An arduous task at best with inherent high metal loss.
  2. Crushing and separation. Difficult and expensive and often left to subcontractors.

A new alternative
The problem was presented to Dross Engineering's design depart-ment and an innovative solution resulted from their research. This solution enables diecasting foundries to recycle 'in-house' reject components with cast-in liners in addition to 'traditional' scrap such as runners and risers.

The technique is 'operator friendly' with a minimum level of manual inter-vention. It is also 'accountant friend-ly' as maximum metal recovery and an extremely rapid return on invest-ment is achieved.

The equipment proposed by Dross Engineering is completely different from anything presently available on the market.

Test results…
A major European automobile manufacturer with integrated diecasting foundry facilities producing engine blocks with cast-in inserts by the pressure die technique has solved their reject recycling problem with the equipment supplied by Dross Engineering.

A test run using Dross Engineering's equipment gave the following results:
