Creating a forum for global security in defence

Plans for DSEi 2009 (Defence Systems & Equipment International) are in full swing. After the success of 2007, which saw 26,500 visitors crowding the aisles of ExCeL in London’s Docklands, the show is on track for another record exhibitor turnout.

Organisers anticipate the 2009 show will grow by 15 per cent in comparison to the 2007 event, which was itself a record year in terms of both exhibiting space and visitor numbers.

DSEi, which is now part of Clarion Defence & Security’s portfolio of events, is working closely with UKTi’s Defence & Security Organisation to ensure the show attracts the maximum number of foreign delegations and high ranking senior visitors. The last DSEi saw 77 official delegations attending from 50 countries. The organising team prides itself on offering the most unbiased bidding system for this type of event.

DSEi’s strong appeal to both visitors and exhibitors lies in its ability to consistently bring together the entire defence supply chain under one roof. Whether you are a prime contractor wanting to display the capability of a platform or technology, or an SME design and manufacturing house looking for a route for your products to cross into the defence and security environment, DSEi provides an ideal forum.

Cutting edge technologies on show

Nearly a fifth of visitors in 2007 said they visited DSEi to keep up-to-date with what was new in the industry. They were not disappointed with more than 1,350 exhibitors from 40 countries showcasing their latest technologies, products and services. Reinforcing the international mix of the exhibitor base, DSEi 2009 is expecting to have a record 29 national pavilions exhibiting.

The last DSEi saw the introduction of the Innovation Showcase – an opportunity for small to medium sized defence companies and supply chain contractors to present their new products, services and technologies. These free-to-attend, onfloor sessions proved very popular and this concept will be reprised for 2009 in a prime location.

Further support for SMEs looking to access defence markets is also provided by the First Time Exhibitor (FTE) Zone. This is highly cost-effective way for new exhibitors to test out the waters at DSEi and reap the benefits exhibiting brings. Nearly 140 companies opted to appear in the FTE Zone during the last show – but many more companies were also first time exhibitors.

As the boundaries between the disciplines of defence and security continue to blur, DSEi 2009 is also focusing on attracting exhibitors that design and engineer security systems and technologies. The series of educational seminars and workshops to be held during the show will cover a range of both defence and security topics. Hosted by a range of specialist organizations and publications, these events will be free of charge to exhibitors.

Waterside showcase

The waterside location of ExCeL means that visiting warships will once again be invited to berth beside the exhibition halls to offer ships visits to all visitors. In 2007 six ships from four countries attended DSEi, attracting more than 2,600 visitors to the conducted tours.

Next year will also see the return of waterborne demonstrations by various naval suppliers and the popular British Army demonstration area will also offer a visually interesting focal point within the halls. Miss DSEi 2009 and you really will miss out.
