History

The origins of DSSR go back over 60 years when the Practice was set up in Glasgow but coverage now extends to London, Manchester, Birmingham and Harrogate in the UK with associated practices in France, Germany, North America and the UAE.

DSSR only provides consultancy services in M&E design and, with a staff of 240, this makes us one of the largest in this sector of the UK construction industry.

DSSR’s history in airport developments also started in Glasgow with the development of the main terminal in 1965 followed by numerous other projects for both airlines and airport operators in the UK and overseas and culminating in our present day involvement with T5 at Heathrow Airport.

Track Record

As a Practice DSSR covers most sectors of construction although transportation projects, both air and rail, commercial office developments and healthcare facilities are our three main specialisms.

In terms of iconic or landmark buildings, these would have to include T5 at Heathrow Airport, the Canary Wharf Tower in London Docklands and The Emirates Towers in Dubai.
In addition to T5, other significant airport projects that we have been involved with include the new Heathrow Air Traffic Control Tower, Terminal 4 at Heathrow, the North Terminal at Gatwick, the redevelopment of Edinburgh Airport, technical adviser on M&E issues to Jacobs Engineering on the new terminal at Cork International Airport and the master planning of the development of Birmingham International Airport.

Airport Projects

For BAA, DSSR have been privileged to be involved in three major new terminal developments in the last 25 years, these being T4 Heathrow, North Terminal Gatwick and T5 Heathrow. The intervening time has seen a massive shift in the scale of things, for example the floor area of T5B, the first of the T5 satellites, is similar in area to the original T4.

Elsewhere, and on a completely different scale, DSSR have been involved in a new terminal development in Belize, the refurbishment and expansion of airports in former Soviet states and, currently, acting as advisers to BAA Lynton on the new T5 Hotel being developed by Arora.

From DSSR’s perspective, projects have now taken on a more wide ranging scope, particularly with regard to intermodal links. Our experiences working for the likes of London Underground, Virgin Trains and Railtrack have helped us to develop a broader knowledge base that has been of great use at T5 where we have been involved in the stations for the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line.

Conversely, our airport track record has served us extremely well on the Ashford International Station project which was designed on airport terminal principles.

Consultancy Services

Our core activity is building engineering services. In the context of airports this includes air conditioning, ventilation, heating, lighting, power supplies and distribution, fixed ground power, apron lighting.

Within this broad field, DSSR can provide advice on energy efficiency and renewables through our Sustainability Group, CHP, grey water recycling, thermal modelling and daylight analysis.
