Established in 1934 in Inkster, Mich., USA, Wolverine played a vital role in development of rubber coated gaskets. Today the company conducts extensive product and material research on virtually any substrate, including cold-rolled steel, aluminum, stainless steel, vulcanized fiber and paper.

Wolverine produces a wide range of materials, along with gaskets for engine, transmission, fuel, compressor and brake insulator systems, and deep drawn parts such as sleeves, assembly, press-in lids, casing lids and plates, spring washers and protective caps.

The company develops, prototypes, tests and produces gaskets, seals and insulators from materials selected and/or compounded for their customers’ specific applications and performance requirements. Those proprietary compounds include:

A Selection of Products

• Steel-N^® – offers exceptional tensile and compression strength, while providing excellent sealing characteristics. A steel base is coated with an oil-resistant, specially compounded nitrile rubber and release coating to facilitate removal. This product is recommended for high-temperature fluid sealing applications where torque retention is critical.
• Foamet® – a crosslinked, chemically blown compounded nitrile synthetic rubber, bonded to steel or aluminum base, offers good temperature resistance, compression set and torque retention. Foamet is recommended for sealing uneven or stamped flanges.
• Alum-N^® – provides superior tensile and compressive strength and sealing characteristics. It is used where corrosion or weight is a factor, and consists of an aluminum alloy base coated with firmly-bonded nitrile synthetic rubber and release coating.
• Lamiseal – is designed for EGR and similar applications that require high temperature resistance up to 1600 F° (870 C°).
• HNBR is appropriate in applications that require slightly better temperature resistance than NBR – including head gaskets and intake manifold gaskets. HNBR has higher heat resistance than NBR, and will function without degradation when exposed to temperatures that are about 15 C higher than NBR can withstand.
• Fluoroelastomer can be used in diesel and gasoline engine head gaskets and other applications that require exposure to temperatures about 75 C higher than what HNBR can withstand without degradation.

Wolverine Division has more than 400,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing facilities in Michigan, Virginia and Florida in the U.S., as well as a facility in Germany. These facilities conduct metal stamping, coating and slitting operations. "Wolverine has developed manufacturing operations that can be customized to the performance requirements of the product," says Pittas. "And all our locations produce gaskets with tolerances as low as +/10 microns coating thickness per side on an approximately one meter width of coil coated material."
