ECOS carry out oil spill risk assessments and net environmental benefit analyses for clients during the early stages of oil spill planning. These analyses are essential to the planning process as individual ports, harbours, oil handling facilities and offshore installations will have varying local risks, environmental conditions and environmental sensitivities.
For ports and harbour oil spill risk assessment takes into account a wide range of factors to produce easy to use risk maps such as that shown in Figure 1.
Net environmental benefit analyses are carried out to determine the optimum response options for the individual port or facility.
ECOS are highly skilled in oil spill risk assessment, contingency planning & training. Since the company was established, some several hundred plans have been prepared for the following facility types:
ECOS’s geographical work base includes that conducted throughout the UK, Europe, South America, Africa and the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, South-east Asia and Australia.

Training
ECOS professional affiliations include:
Trainers have experience in a wide range of disciplines from formal teachers to engineers. Theses disciplines are coupled with 18 years’ experience developing oil spill plans, running exercises and providing on-call response to ports and harbours and the hydrocarbons industry.
Training is carried out for Nautical Institute Levels 1p-5p for the ports, harbours and oil handling facility teams. Accredited training for offshore oil industry on-scene responders (4hr), onshore duty holders (40hr) and corporate management (4hr) has been widely carried over the past few years.
Exercises
An ongoing exercise programme is a key requirement of the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation, 1990, ECOS have been conducting exercises for major oil industry clients, both offshore, onshore and shipboard personnel for a number of years. The exercises are conducted by highly experienced oil spill professionals, all of whom are currently working within the spill control industry.
ECOS conduct exercises and take part as players in exercises with oil industry clients, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency national exercise programme and for ports and harbours clients.
ECOS work closely with clients to help them gain and maintain ISO 14001 offering the following services:
