"Engine-driven water pumps are directly linked to the engine’s RPM and thus produce flow rates based upon that RPM. Design points are generally based on the most extreme conditions. As a result, up to 95% of the time, mechanically driven water pumps are producing much more flow than required. Also, the drive mechanism tends to increase weight, decrease life and makes it difficult to design an optimal pump."
