A presentation on Metal Stirring & Melting Using Electromagnetic Pumping Techniques

The paper discusses the techniques available today for effective melting and stirring of aluminium within reverberatory furnaces and the benefits that electromagnetic techniques can have in these particular environments. It looks at how these techniques have been driven by aluminium operations looking for very good chemical and temperature homogeneity, increases in metal recovery and increases in production from their existing plant. It discusses the commercial benefits of increased circulation, metal recovery and more importantly reliability of these equipments within a cast house operation.

Over the past decade there has been significant work undertaken on the application of electromagnetic pumping within the aluminium industry.

EMP Technologies has over 31 projects utilising its EMP system with considerable success throughout the worlds aluminium industry with some clients now buying their 2nd and 3rd systems.

EMP Technologies are able to offer complete turnkey solutions to clients of all aluminium sectors from the primary through to the die caster. The EMP System has a flexibility that allows different benefits to be achieved by different clients depending upon their particular application.

EMP Technologies are able to offer the initial analysis, study, specification, design, supply, supervision, commissioning, equipment and process operational training. The EMP team has extensive first hand operational expertise in the management, operation and maintenance of an aluminium casthouse, from scrap handling, charging, melting and casting practices and are therefore able to offer consultancy services.

Electromagnetic pumping with the EMP System provides a powerful and instantly reversible circulation and melting process with no moving parts, making the system inherently reliable with extremely low maintenance requirements.

The EMP system, which is easily retrofitted to existing furnace installations, has provided clients with a variety of benefits including;

Very short payback periods (some clients experiencing less than six months)

Easy retrofit to existing furnace installations or new installations

Increases in production in excess of 25% have been experienced by both primary and secondary aluminium operators
