the world-wide restructuring process in the energy sector enhances the already existing dichotomies in the energy field. These dichotomies manifest themselves in diverging political positions on the extent of tolerable consumption of energy resources and on the way of energy utilisation as well as on the uneven distribution of energy resources and a fair burden sharing for emission reduction. Great hopes are placed on the innovative power of the energy industry to meet the growing future demand for energy in a sustainable way.
Against this background Verbundplan is organising the 3rd International Energy Symposium from 19th to 21st September in Ossiach, Austria. The biennial series of the International Energy Symposium is a renowned, international platform for topics of the future in the energy sector to discuss new approaches for the design of our energy systems and to give impetus to concrete projects.
Representatives from the political, economic and research communities are invited to discuss in Ossiach the following topics:
Energy -related dichotomies in society: We are making ever increasing demands on energy systems. The growing standard of living and, in particular, the improved comfort of living as well as increasing mobility, all this requires additional energy input, above all in industrialised countries. In developing countries, on the other hand, a growing population is faced with a dwindling stock of resources that can barely satisfy basic energy requirements.
Political challenges for restructuring the energy systems: On the one hand, energy cycles have to be perceived as one global entity, as one environment, which is subject to the laws of nature and unites humankind in a community of fate. On the other hand, dichotomies of regional availability of resources, technological progress, social values and the adopted market mechanism seem hardly to be reconcilable with each other.
Innovation and technology are able to unite dichotomies. They can raise the standard of living and at the same time save resources. While, by using intelligent concepts, technology can serve several purposes simultaneously and resolve problems in the sectors of energy, water, communication, protected areas and habitats, it may, on the other hand, change quite fundamentally the way we shape and design our lives.
