Modern Task and Battlefield Management for Combat Helicopters

The EuroNav IV leads the way

The French Army Aviation has adopted the EuroNav Task Management System for their Gazelle, Puma and Cougar fleets, as South Africa for the A 109 LUH, Sweden for the A 109 LUHS and as the Swiss Air Force for Puma and Cougar. The EuroNav Ground Station is an additional mission management asset employed by a number of combat helicopter units enabling mission preparation and analysis on squadron level. With a “built in” communications feature, the EuroNav IV ground and airborne systems offer the user a perfectly integrated battlefield superiority package both for army and naval applications.

Mission Planning

The ground station is designed to prepare all mapping data of the theatre of operations and mission data. It comes in two versions: A portable, ruggedized version for field use and a PC type version for fixed operations. The station enables the crews to do a whole set of tasks:

• Creation of mapping databases adapted to the systems using various sources such as digitized data from mil geo institutions, Jeppesen Data, maps scanned by the user, etc.
• Pre-flight mission and terrain analysis for daylight or NVG missions
• Creation, import or export of tactical situations, navigation waypoints / flight plans or whole missions through a PCMCIA data loader in the airborne system
• Creations of objects, obstacles, tactical points, no fly zones, danger areas, AAA ranges, etc. a NATO symbol editor allows to quickly design and assign these points and objects.

Navigation

The EuroNav IV airborne system is above all a digital map computer with a number of functions designed to reduce the workload of aircrews:

• Display of the helicopter’s position on multiple map layers. Plus display of relevant navigation information such as heading, ETE, ETA, flight plan, waypoints, objects
• Management of ground collision risks with terrain coloration by altitude showing areas that are higher, at the same altitude or lower than the helicopter is flying. This is enabled by a 2.5D terrain model.
• Threat management, i.e. management of alarms pertaining to specific threats: Kill ranges of enemy weapon systems, power lines, masts, terrain, etc.
• Management of thousands of user points. That is report points, refuelling points, mission objectives, town names, important streets, airports, rivers, restricted areas or radio navigation assets.

Battlefield Communication and Awareness

Both the airborne system and the ground station of the EuroNav IV are compatible to a wide range of communication assets. This integrity allows sending encrypted text messages between the air and the ground. Additionally all troops equipped with these communication assets can be tracked on the airborne/ground map in real time.

• VHF Link. The EuroNav IV offers an interface to the Saab AIS transponder (Active Identification System). This module is a mandatory standard for all SOLAS ships (over 60,000 worldwide) and is available in an airborne version as well. Of course ground based troops (trucks, etc) can be equipped with that unit as well. The Swedish Navy uses the EuroNav / AIS package extensively with their A 109 LUHS and CH-46s-
• GSM Link. The optional EuroNav GSM module allows exchanging messages & tracking of objects which are equipped with the module. Based on a Siemens MX20 cell phone, it is extremely inexpensive and lightweight.
• PLS interface. Locate downed pilots and troops in distress fast and efficiently. The EuroNav fully supports the Cubic PLS protocol. The signals are displayed on the moving map and it is just a matter of creating a direct to navigation towards it. This is done in one or two seconds. Other PLS protocols can be implemented upon request.
