Helping children using complementary therapies

Increasingly parents, and some GP's, are turning to alternative therapies to try to alleviate childhood conditions for which traditional medicine often has few resources except the prescription of medication. Dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorders, Tourette's Syndrome and general behavioural problems can be, and often are, debilitating for child and family alike and dramatically affect quality of life for all.

Family Therapies is a specialist treatment centre for conditions such as these, based on a unique method of addressing children's disorders developed by its founder, Harry Rowe FAO, using Osteomyology techniques. Osteomyology itself was devised by Alan Clemens and Karen Harding of the Association of Osteomyologists.

Formerly a pharmacist, Harry returned to university to study spinal and body manipulation and is a qualified practitioner in Applied Kinesiology, acupuncture/acupressure, Auriculotherapy, hypnotherapy, homeopathy, nutrition and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Harry works with two other practitioners: Louis Nyman MAO and David Williams MAO.

Harry's treatments are tailor-made for the individual, using a combination of gentle spinal and cranial manipulation, Auriculotherapy, Applied Kinesiology and therapeutic massage, together with the recommendation of nutritional supplementation and homeopathic remedies where appropriate. In some circumstances, for conditions such as bed-wetting, nail biting and eating or compulsive disorders, hypnotherapy might also be employed.

Family Therapies' practitioners manipulate bones, muscles and ligaments to correct structural misalignments and muscular discomfort which can cause nerve interference and affect the proper neurological communication in the body. Correcting these problems helps the child's musculo-skeletal, circulatory and lymphatic systems to function more effectively and helps the child's body to heal itself. Remarkable improvements in the overall well-being of the child can be achieved. Family Therapies' practitioners work hand in hand with the child's GP and specialist. Whilst their goal is to reduce or eliminate a child's need for medication, they will never ask that a child should stop taking prescription medicines or that parents should go against their GP's advice for their child.

Family Therapies is one of the very few practices in the UK which specialises in the use of Auriculotherapy for the treatment of children. This is a system of diagnosis and treatment using the cranial nerves in the ear. Years of scientific research in France and America have produced such impressive results that the World Health Organisation now recognises Auriculotherapy as a means of diagnosis and treatment for conditions such as compulsive disorders, musculo-skeletal problems, learning disorders, behavioural problems and many illnesses. Generally, nerve reflex points in me ear are only evident when there is a condition to be diagnosed, making Auriculotherapy a particularly accurate and highly effective diagnostic tool.

Not surprisingly perhaps, Family Therapies is increasingly called upon to help children recover from sporting injuries. The more competitive children are in sports, the more likely they are to succumb to injury as they challenge their finely tuned bodies in physically stressful situations. Specialist hands-on treatment, combined with the use of a range of hi-tech. equipment, is used to ensure the child makes a fast and full recovery.
