Managing Your Own Health and Wellbeing
Set out below are self-help suggestions and useful information relating
to conditions connected with
conjunctivitis. However, if
you have any concerns that last for more than a few days, they should be
reported to your doctor.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, or inflammation of the white of the eye and the lining
of the eyelid, is caused by bacteria, a virus or some chemical agent.
Eyes may itch, burn and feel scratchy as though they have some foreign
body in them. Eyelids may become swollen.
Bright light, either
directly or reflected from some light surface can be painful. Sunglasses
may help – not an eye-patch.
Resting your eyes, using compresses, and gentle bathing in an eye
lotion can be soothing. Brolene from the chemist can also help.
Some attacks may clear up without the need for treatment, but
sufferers should visit their general practitioners not only because the
standard treatment – antibiotic eye drops – is a prescription drug, but
to check for complications.
The condition is infectious and can easily be transferred from one
eye to the other. Be scrupulously clean therefore, keep your towel
separate and carefully dispose of used tissues and handkerchiefs.
