Managing Your Own Health and Wellbeing
Set out below are self-help suggestions and useful information relating
to conditions connected with
indigestion. However, if
you have any concerns that last for more than a few days, they should be
reported to your doctor.
Indigestion
Indigestion is related to the food we eat, the way in which we eat it,
our psychological make-up and our lifestyle.
Its symptoms range from
heartburn and regurgitation to bloating, flatulence and nausea. Its
causes can stem from food intolerances, hasty and irregular meals,
overeating, bolting our food, heavy smoking and drinking, too much fat
or spice in the diet, too little fruit, not drinking enough water, over
indulgence in coffee and tea, anxiety, depression, stress and
over-ambition.
Relief may be obtained by remedying such of these causes as you are
capable of dealing with, taking bicarbonate of soda or one of the wide
variety of proprietary preparations stocked by your chemist to help you
with your particular aspects of dyspepsia – bloating, trapped wind,
heartburn, regurgitation (antacids) nausea (anti-emetics). Seek the
pharmacist’s advice.
Remember, however, that indigestion is sometimes a symptom of a more
serious condition such as stomach or duodenal ulcers. If in any doubt
talk to your doctor.
