Facts and Figures about Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt is continental Europe’s busiest freight and passenger airport and ranks seventh worldwide. Frankfurt Airport served more than 45 million passengers in 1999 and thereby achieved a new annual passenger record. In terms of flown cargo tonnage, Frankfurt Airport is Europe’s number one cargo gateway with 1,428 million tons handled in 1999.

With 12.573 employees, FAG is one of the leading airport companies in the world. With over 58,300 employees, Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s largest employment complex at a single location. There are over 460 employers at the airport including Lufthansa German Airlines being the home base carrier at Frankfurt Airport.

The airport’s operational area covers about 15.6 square kilometres. FAG not only provides facilities to airlines and other tenants but also a wide range of airport services. Additional services are offered by airport concessionaires. Travellers can choose from a wide selection of quality products available in 120 stores and boutiques and 10 Duty Free Shops. A number of German banks offer a comprehensive range of domestic and international banking services at their branches in both terminals.

Frankfurt Airport, with a wide selection of flight frequencies and destinations, is one of the most attractive connecting points in the world. Advanced technology and efficient ground handling make transferring at Frankfurt convenient and fast. The minimum connecting time for transfer passengers is 45 minutes and this is quite unique among major international airports. Nearly every second passenger is using Frankfurt Airport as a transfer hub and the 45 minutes minimum connecting time is an important service standard.

Quick transfers are possible primarily because of the airport’s automated baggage handling system, the world’s largest. This electronically controlled, fully automated baggage conveyor and sortation system comprises some 56.5 kilometres of transport guideways. This system ensures a high level of service quality and serves as a vital umbilical cord between both terminals. In terms of capacity, size, configuration, performance and quality, the system is unique in the world.

The elevated, fully automated Sky Line people-mover train provides convenient transfers between Terminals 1 and 2. By segregating domestic and international travellers on the Sky Line, international transfer passengers avoid having to go through passport/customs control when switching between the two terminals. Although there are two terminals, they function as an integrated single complex enabling Frankfurt to maintain the 45 minutes transfer time.

The theoretical planning value for aircraft movements per hour at the airport or the basic co-ordinated runway capacity is currently established at 78 and is being increased through implementation of advanced technology. An exceptional record of 91 aircraft movements was achieved once due to extremely favourable meteorological conditions and optimum air traffic flow. In 1999, Frankfurt Airport had 439.093 aircraft movements per year and thus has exceeded an average of 1,203 aircraft movements per day.

In recent years deregulation and liberalisation of international air traffic have led to almost ruinous competition between the airlines with a significant impact on the airport. In order to meet the challenges Frankfurt Airport has changed the organisational structure. The company now consists of six Strategic Business Areas and four Support Areas.

Frankfurt Airport has gained first-rate experience and a profound knowledge of customer requirements with more than seventy years of successful work as an international airport. Frankfurt Airport offers an extensive range of services to other airports including consultancy, facility management, traffic and terminal management, information technology and aviation ground services including the operations of all kind of airport facilities. Frankfurt Airport is committed to charting a new course in airport and service management by meeting customer needs from a single source.
