Gruner + Jahr is an internationally operating publishing and printing group. Our publishing operation, with some 12,000 employees worldwide, publishes around 90 magazines and newspapers in 13 countries. In the financial year 1997/1998 it made worldwide sales of over DM 5.1 billion. About 55 percent of this revenue comes from international activities.

Gruner + Jahr is owned by the Gütersloh-based company Bertelsmann AG (74.9%) and the Jahr publishing family in Hamburg (25.1%).

About 40 magazines appear in France, the USA, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Poland, Russia and Austria. The two biggest group companies outside Germany are Prisma Presse in Paris, today the second-largest magazine publisher in France, and Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing Company in New York.

In Germany Gruner + Jahr publishes some 40 magazines, including STERN. Despite the great diversity of its titles, Gruner + Jahr publishes only quality titles that are market leaders in their respective market segments, not only in terms of sales, but also when it comes to journalistic content and visual presentation.

In 1986 Gruner + Jahr entered the newspaper business, which it expanded following the reunification of Germany. Today G+J's international newspaper activities include three newspapers in Hungary, one in Slovakia and one in Romania.

Gruner + Jahr’s printing works in Germany and the USA are among the most modern in the world. Gruner + Jahr sees a growing business field in the Internet and in its radio and television production company, which produces various TV programme categories.

As a publisher, Gruner + Jahr is pluralistic, liberal and independent. The editorial teams work on the editor-in-chief principle, under which the editor-in-chief determines and is responsible for the journalistic orientation of the individual title.
