UNPARALLELED EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY WITH CONTINUITY FROM 8-18

Situated in the heart of Northeast Scotland in Moray and Strathspey, Gordonstoun School and Aberlour House offer a unique brand of independent education in Scotland. Entry to Gordonstoun is guaranteed to boys and girls entering Aberlour from age 11 - ensuring a smooth transfer to independent secondary education if they join from primary school.

Both schools have annual development plans that structure major improvements and refurbishment to keep the schools up to pace with modern educational developments. Large-scale investment in computers and Information Technology is a particularly exciting recent addition - the schools now have their own websites and all the information and communication advantages of the Internet. The new IT centre at Gordonstoun is the hub of a school-wide network in academic departments and boarding houses. A new state-of-the-art sail training vessel has also recently been acquired which completed the millennium Trans-Atlantic Tall Ships Race over summer 2000.

Both schools offer excellence through the philosophy of the Founder, Kurt Hahn, now based on four pillars: challenge, responsibility, service and internationalism. The staff pupil ratio of 1:7 leads to enviable examination results and high achievements over a wide range of sports and other activities. There are excellent sporting opportunities in rugby, hockey, skiing, tennis, cross country running, netball, cricket and athletics at school and district level. Music and drama are also strong with both schools staging high quality concerts and productions locally and overseas. The most recent overseas performing arts tours were an orchestra tour to New Zealand in 1999, The USA 2000 drama tour last summer and a music tour to Norway in April 2002.

The outdoor education programmes offer unparalleled opportunities. Students from both Aberlour House and Gordonstoun undertake expeditions to the Cairngorms and further west throughout the School year. Ocean cruises in the School's sail training vessel, Ocean Spirit of Moray, off the Western Isles, are supplemented by training in cutters in the Moray Firth: a programme that is unique in British independent education.

In a world that has become increasingly materialistic, service and community remain central to the School's philosophy. The community and rescue services flourish at Gordonstoun - all members of the school join a service having completed initial training in first aid and other basic skills. The fire service unit, HM Coastguard, the water-borne rescue services, the mountain rescue, conservation and community services- all play their part within the school and local community, a preparation for service in later life. Pupils also undertake community service projects to Thailand, India, and Tanzania during the holidays.

The schools' motto 'Plus est en Vous' - 'There is more in you' is clearly at work in both these vigorous hard working establishments, where the friendliness and happy atmosphere are apparent as soon as you drive through the gates.

In March 2002 Gordonstoun and Aberlour House merged with North Foreland Lodge, a senior girls' boarding school in Hampshire. There are many similarities between the schools in both situation and philosophy and this merger is seen as a significant development in the independent education sector.
