Heggset Engineering AS

For more than 50 years, Norway has been a considerable producer of aluminium. This industry has given great contributions to the worldwide aluminium technology development for many decades. Heggset Engineering has for almost 3 decades played the role of innovative engineering in this industry.

Due to changes in the aluminium industry, the demand for engineering work alone has decreased. The new trend is buying turn-key equipment. To meet this new situation, Heggset Engineering has for the last years supplied the industry with tailor made equipment.

The main fields are still casthouse and anode technology. The company has developed a few key products of its own as a base for technology supply:

New DC casting machine top:
Heggset engineering has developed a new concept for DC casting machine tilt frame. The concept is based on a bearing design allowing both tilting and turning from one corner of the tilt frame. This gives the benefit of being away from the casting pit for mould preparation and maintenance while emptying the pit. The first tilt frame was installed in New York (State) 2003.

New casting wheel technology:
A 50 years old casting technology, known as the "Properzi-process", has been given a new approach by Heggset Engineering. The patented idea is to compensate the ingot shrinkage by narrowing the groove width during solidification. Instead of loosing the contact between the ingot and the groove due to shrinkage of the ingot, the groove wall movement will add compression to the ingot and secure a better cooling rate. The compression will also give better process control. The outlet ingot temperature will also be much more constant and repeatable. Advanced mathematical modelling has been carried out confirming these benefits.

The concept has not yet been tested in full scale and the company is actively seeking a partner to proceed with the development.

Anode butts cleaning:
Normally the butts cleaning starts with a pair of hydraulic "jaws" forcing the bath apart from the anode remnants (butts). A new milling process developed has given the cleaning process better performance. Two highly powered cutter heads removes the bath layer in a combined shearing and tearing process on both sides of the anode studs.

This method gives reduced size of the largest pieces of removed bath while at the same time the mill avoids producing fine grain fractions due to the special cutter head design.

A suction arrangement combined with a closed milling process chamber gives a process with almost no dust contamination. The arrangement is highly competitive to the conventional process equipment.

The first bath removal mill is installed and running at a new rodding shop in Norway.

Rotating dross processing furnace:
A new concept for dross processing furnaces has been developed. Hydraulic tilting for emptying and cleaning as well as hydraulic operated door system gives a highly versatile and easy to operate melting and processing furnace. Equipped with high efficiency oxifuel burner system and a unique flue gas suction system this equipment meets the customer’s expectation to a modern furnace concept.

Handling:
A wide range of handling equipment have been developed by the company through the years:

Heggset Engineering has through the years participated in developing special equipment for the aluminium industry. The company highlights a set of keywords in this process:

These keywords combined with highly skilled employees, innovation capability and hard work is the key to the success of the company.

Taking everything into consideration, the company produces the best technical solutions and in the long run also the most economic solutions for a demanding market.
