INETI is an Institute for Science and Technology within the Ministry of Economy centred around the notion that innovation is essential for a Sustainable Development.

Acting as a partner of competitive companies, INETI aims at continuously developing and strengthening its innovation potential in priority areas of the Portuguese Economy which it wishes to serve.

This mission clearly needs international collaboration with similar Institutions in other countries, under specific contracts, helping to bridge between companies in Portugal and abroad in the of R, D&D which are within the scientific and technical expertise of INETI.

INETI has several Departments in the following areas: Energy, Environment, Electronics, Optics, Materials Science, Biotechnology, Production technologies, Chemistry, Food processing. In particular the Energy area is organised in two Departments. One is the renewable Energies Department and the other is Energy Engineering and Control Environment.

Their general goal is to develop the energy technologies (equipment, new fuels, processes, methodologies, studies leading to a reduction of fossil fuel consumption, in order to induce a reduction of green-house gaseous emissions, at he same time exploring as much as possible the natural energy resources in Portugal (mainly Renewables) and other resources like urban, agricultural and industrial wastes, as well as residues from forest or from agriculture, in order to achieve the best possible balance with the Environment, protecting and even adding to the competitiveness of the economy.

The Renewable Energy Department has activities in the following subjects:

In the Energy Engineering and Control Environment Department the present activities are in the following subjects:

The two Department also have an important activity through the two certified Laboratories, one for the testing and characterisation of fuels and the other for testing and certification of solar energy components and systems.

They provide opportunities for graduate students from Universities (both Portuguese and foreign) for industrial training, graduate and postgraduate studies in the scope of ongoing projects co-ordinated by mostly Senior Researchers of INETI. Some of these studies involve international co-operation.

At present the two Departments also have an important contribution in terms of the Portuguese representation in several IEA bodies, namely in the CERT, the Working Parties for Renewable Energy Technology, End-Use Technology, Fossil Fuel Technology as well as in the Expert Groups on R&D Priority Setting and Evaluation, Electric Power Technologies and Oil and Gas.
