Jet-Lube Inc was set up in 1949 by two brothers whose initial idea was to provide the oil industry with a range of air-driven grease application systems that would automatically apply drill pipe thread compound to the pipe, hence the company name Jet-Lube. However, having become involved in the industry, they soon realized that the thread compounds of the day were no longer fit for purpose as the drilling companies were drilling ever deeper, and into harder formations with a resultant rise in down hole temperatures not experienced before.
In answer to those needs in 1950, they developed and introduced a specialized compound that addressed the problems of unreliable pipe connections. This new compound formula addressed the problems of heat, corrosion, and friction better than any other product available, and was named JET-LUBE® KOPR-KOTE®.
Now, some 57 years later, JET-LUBE® KOPR-KOTE®
remains the energy industry standard when considering
drill pipe thread compounds of this type.
Since those early days, Jet-Lube has expanded; moving the corporate office and main plant to Houston, Texas. Between 1973 and 1983, Jet-Lube established two other plants outside the United States; one in Edmonton, Canada and one in Maidenhead, in the United Kingdom. These three manufacturing facilities are the backbone of Jet-Lube’s worldwide distribution system.
During this time of growth the company continued to develop other thread compounds that addressed other oilfield requirements, including addressing the early attempts the industry made to lessen the impact of its operations on the environment. Jet-Lube’s commitment to this endeavour can be demonstrated via the fact, that in 1984 it decided to remove the lead from its own thread compounds, a move that was some five years in advance of such regulations being introduced by the United States government. This stage of the company’s evolution also saw the development and introduction of other metal-free thread compounds, many of which are still in demand to this day.
It was during this time that the company continued to expand its product
range to include anti-seize formulations,
valve sealants for wellhead and flow-line valves, and a specialised
lubricants range that provides greases for use in the coldest environments
to some of the harshest as found in such locations as steel mills.
Jet-Lube’s innovative thinking continues to this day and has resulted
in its latest family of products: the ECF range of truly environmental thread
compounds and greases, the first of which was introduced to the energy industry
some three years ago. This family now includes six products, including a
jacking system grease for use on the legs and lifting gears found on
jack up rigs, as well as a high-performance grease for sub sea use. All
six products are fully biodegradable with no bioaccumulation, and all are
harmless to all living organisms tested. Every ECF product is registered
as “E” in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, and “Yellow” in Norway;
both ratings being the highest classification that a finished grease or
compound can be awarded.
In 2007, Jet-Lube became a recipient of the prestigious OTC Spotlight on New Technology Award for their contribution to the advancement of the energy industry via the first two members of their ECF family: NCS-30™ ECF for rotary shouldered drill pipe connections, and Seal-Guard™ ECF for metal-to-metal premium threaded production tubulars.
All three plants hold ISO 9001 certification; ensuring that every aspect of our manufacturing process - from our R&D staff of chemists and laboratory technicians, through to the production facilities, shipping, and materials procurement procedures and documentation - is constantly monitored and maintained to an extremely high standard.
The company remains committed to lessening the impact on the environment that industry makes, and to this end will continue working closely with the oil and gas companies themselves to identify new needs and products to meet those needs such as our ECF range: products that are truly “environmentally friendly” in every sense of the phrase.
