JLS Ovens Ltd.

Ovens for Aluminium

The basic JLS air re-circulating oven design was first introduced in 1938, and proved to be extremely successful. During the years since then, the range has diversified and enlarged, and there are now nearly as many variations as there are ovens in the field, catering for thermal treatments from 60°C to 750°C. JLS now also offer furnaces for service up to 1200°C.

The majority of applications for JLS ovens have been in the field of heat treatment of Aluminium in all its forms, and most contract heat treatment companies have JLS plant in daily use.

With the increased use of aluminium in the motor industry, and the introduction of more sophisticated materials in Aerospace, new plant is in demand to expand production and to replace old equipment with ovens having the increased precision demanded by today’s technology.

The JLS range is continuously upgraded to take the fullest advantage of the rapid strides being made in the field of advanced control equipment, not only for temperature control but also for logic control of automatic plant using several ovens in the process. The JLS development policy leads to innovative designs which give higher efficiencies and cost savings, without losing the traditional build strength, quality, and longevity associated with the brand name.

Applications
In a brief introduction of this nature, it is impossible to discuss the vast range of applications JLS have satisfied successfully, but the illustrations below bracket the extremes of the range.

Figure 1

Figure 1 is a line of four bottom-loading ovens being built in JLS’ factory for installation in 2002 as a turn-key project, using a fully-automatic SCADA system designed to optimise the oven utilisation for solution heat treatment and ageing of aluminium castings. The load is presented to the plant at the loading station, and collected again at the same spot after the automatic cycle of solution heat treatment, quenching and ageing.

Figure 2

Figure 2 is a double conveyor oven for drying plaster moulds for precision cast turbo-charger wheel patterns. This is a low temperature (200°C) application, but the environment is aggressive, and the ovens must give 24-hour service throughout the year.

At the other end of the scale, figure 3 shows a typical simple oven for solution treatment, of which many are in daily use throughout the aerospace industry in particular.

The abbreviated list below indicates the diversity of applications for JLS products in the Aluminium world:

New applications appear every day, and the JLS technical team are ready to discuss them to arrive at the most practical solution to suit the client.

Design and manufacture
JLS ovens are designed and built in the company’s own factory and tested prior to despatch. Many ovens require no further preparation for use after connection to mains services and commissioning. Large ovens, and turn-key plant require JLS’ presence on site of course, and our engineers are fully equipped to carry out installation work of this kind.

After sales service
The company offers a wide range of spare parts for ovens and furnaces, and its electrical, mechanical and commissioning engineers offer a full servicing, repair and refurbishment service on site or in our own works.

Overseas sales
JLS are proud of the fact that about 30% of its sales in recent years have been into export markets, and there are recent installations for example in China, USA, Thailand, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Australia, Egypt and most European countries.
