The IFA’s Wasted Tax Research found in 2002 charities missed out on £372
million through donors’ tax inefficiency – not only are charities losing
out, but who wouldn’t get satisfaction out of the Inland Revenue providing
more money to their chosen cause at no extra cost to themselves?
Launched in February 2001, Justgiving is keen to reduce this loss to
charities and donors by using online technology to make tax-efficient giving
easier, more engaging, relevant and fun.
Justgiving, a private company, is also using its expertise in Information
and Communications Technology to simplify the management, communication and
evaluation of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Its first venture
in this area, Payroll Giving Plus, is an online payroll giving system, which
has been developed with leading law firm Herbert Smith. It is also working
on tools for employee volunteering and matched-funding programmes.
Justgiving currently powers over 100 charity websites, both national and
local, and hosts over 600 charities and 1,000 events on its own website. The
Justgiving technology enables Gift Aid to be reclaimed on each and every
donation; effectively helping charities cut costs without the expense and
complexity of developing their own technology.
The company’s pioneering Events Sponsorship programme, which enables
charity supporters to collect tax-efficient donations through secure
personalised mini-sites, has been officially adopted by the Flora London
Marathon - the world’s largest charity fundraising event. Over £210,000 was
raised online in the 2002 Marathon of which some £32,000 was reclaimed
through Gift Aid. In 2003 with the Marathon a month away, runners have
already raised over £500,000 online for over 200 charities.
In 2002 Justgiving was awarded the New Media Age Grand Prix Award and
Best Use of the Web Award for its Flora Marathon site; was short-listed for
The Charity Times Award for Fundraising and IT Services Supplier; and
received a Special Commendation for the Advocacy Award in the New Statesman
New Media Awards.
Payroll Giving Plus will go live this summer. The system is designed to
fit in with any company’s intranet, maximise the benefits of facilitating
payroll giving and, as an out-sourced solution, be a cost-effective means of
keeping workloads for IT, Payroll, HR, Community Affairs and Communications
teams to a minimum. It gives employees the chance to manage their charitable
giving as often as they like – they can even respond to emergencies
tax-efficiently; raise more funds for their chosen causes or for a Corporate
Challenge; and keep up-to-date with their company’s community affairs
programme. The easy-to-use, real-time reports are compatible with most
evaluation systems including the London Benchmarking Model.
Justgiving is also part of the National Grid for Learning's The
Educational Infomat Campaign.
What the press have said in the last year:
“The realities of modern-day giving have been brought to cyberspace,
and by a commercial organisation at that. (…) It is a well-organised,
interesting site with a news archive in each charity's section to keep
visitors abreast of its activities. Each tells you what your donation could
pay for - an interesting and motivating aside. Registrations and donations
appear to be as secure as it is possible to be, so credit and debit card
donations are easy. It took me less than two minutes to dispatch a £25
donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society."
Steve McDowell, The Mail on Sunday
"Justgiving.com is one of the easiest ways to make a tax-efficient
donation."
The Sunday Telegraph
"A well thought-out, one-stop charity site, as useful for fundraisers
as it is for donors."
