Lechler products and services for rolling mills and processing lines

Lechler are the world’s leading spray technologists, founded in Germany in 1879, and now a truly international company, offering products and technical support to diverse industries. The production of rolled flat products of aluminium, other non-ferrous materials and steel is one of our major fields of activities. In addition to our over 250 employees at our Metzingen headquarters (Southern Germany), subsidiary companies have plants and offices in the UK, the USA, China, India, France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Finland and Hungary. Furthermore, we have a network of representatives all over the world and consider ourselves as world’s player in the field of spray nozzles and systems.

Nozzles are essential for the production of metals in the required output production and quality. Typical applications are the defined cooling of cast metals, the removal of oxides from the material surface (de-scaling), the cooling of rolls in hot and cold rolling mills, oiling systems for the rolled product and effective cleaning in pickling lines.

During the years, we have gained a lot of process know-how in relation of the application of our products and can now use this experience to help our customers with tailor-made solutions for their application. Furthermore, we have developed engineered spray systems “nozzles and more” following a strong market demand. Application software programs to develop optimum solutions are another field of our activities. A wide range of nozzle data from our measuring data base, collected over many years, are now the basis for reliable calculations that reflect the reality.

Our simulation programs allow for the determination of the coolant distribution on rolls and product and help to increase product quality, mill output and lifetime of rolls. Furthermore, Lechler can offer roll cooling studies to optimize the heat transfer from the hot roll surface into the cold liquid (water, emulsion or rolling oil/ kerosene); these studies include the optimum arrangement of nozzles as well as temperature calculations using the Heat Transfer Coefficients HTC.

As a result, Lechler can supply complete new roll cooling headers with an optimized configuration with regard to cooling and lubricating, for example in hot & cold strip mills for aluminium, steel and copper/ brass mills.

“Selectospray” selective or zonal roll cooling systems supplied by Lechler for flat rolling mills are now standard in the industry. Since 1975 Lechler have supplied more than 260 Selectospray systems all over the world. The system consists of headers with controllable nozzles via integrated valves, control hoses and tailor-made control cabinet to meet the customer requirements. Interface to the external shape control system can be a simple hardwiring or be means of a profibus or similar. Removal of heat should be as effective as possible and requires an effective selective roll cooling. Our year long experience and knowledge of nozzle parameters is one of our pre-conditions for our success in this field. A wide range of spray valves, from pneumatic control to electro-pneumatic control and purely electrically piloted, allows us to meet all customer requirements. Our latest valve types are the ISA valve (Integrated Solenoid Actuation) for use in emulsion-based rolling mills like steel cold mills and aluminium hot mills and the EVA valve (Electrical Valve Actuation) for rolling oil / kerosene based mills like cold/ foil mills for aluminium and copper/ brass/ bronze.

The Lechler Hot Spray System is another example for an engineered system and it can be supplied in conjunction with a Selectospray system for aluminium cold mills. It reduces the tight edges and can help to increase mill speed and production.

The “LSC” Lechler Spray Controller is a modular system especially made for the controlled application of very small amounts of liquid, such as water, temper fluid or oil for lubricating. Tailor-made spray headers and a dedicated control unit allow for a constant layer of coolant on the rolls and the product with varying speeds and material widths. Typical applications are the doubling of aluminium foils, oiling, wetting and skin-pass rolling.
