Formed in 1998 to develop patient centred heart disease prevention programs for use in primary care and the community.

The backbone of MEDCAL’s products is the MEDCAL Coronary Heart Disease prevention system .This is a cradle to grave method of preventing heart disease in a community.

What does it consist of?

  1. MEDCAL Risk CHD ( “the risk disk”)- a risk assessment and education program for professionals which:-
  • Gives a personal assessment patient using a visual interpretation of risks to increase patient understanding
  • Gives the professional a 10 years (Framingham) risk prediction for decisions on drug intervention.
  • Emphasises life style change as the most important factor in CHD prevention.
  • prints personalised leaflets to reinforce the advice given.
  1. MEDCAL CHD Community Tutor - Touch screen based self assessment and education which:-
  • Helps the user to understand their personal risk factors and assess the effects of possible life style changes
  • Allows them to receive the help and advice when they are most receptive to making changes.
  • gives personal ownership of advice making implementation of life style changes more effective.
  • Prints personalised leaflets to reinforce the advice given.
The Rotherham Road Medical Centre primary health care team won the DOCTOR magazine Coronary Heart Disease Team of the Year award in 2000.

MEDCAL won a HITEA award for Best Publicly- Accessible Health Information System for the interactive touchscreen coronary heart disease tutor in 2002.

MEDCAL current projects

Barnsley Interactive Teenage Education(BITE)

Working with Professor Ruth Chambers (Stafford University) and the BITE project we are developing interactive touch screen based sex education to give young people the needed education direct without the barriers of interpersonal relationships. This project and the related touchscreen tutors is nearly completed and by the autumn will available for purchase and the research published.

Self assessment for depression, Osteoporosis risk assessment and touch screen appointment booking for GP's should be available by the end of the year.
