FLSmidth Möller GmbH
Bulk Handling for the Alumina Industry

FLSmidth Möller GmbH has been providing design, engineering, procurement, erection and commissioning services for turnkey bulk material handling systems since 1934. The company’s reputation is founded on high quality systems and more than 5,000 successful installations worldwide.

Möller became a member of the F.L. Smidth Group in 1996 and is now part of the FFE Minerals Group. With these technology partners, all facets of aluminium production can be addressed, from the bauxite mine to direct feeding of alumina to the smelter pots.

Möller’s service extends from consultancy and engineering during the project stage, through handing-over of complete turnkey bulk handling systems and continues with its strong after-sales service. The company specialises in the realisation of pneumatic conveying systems like the Turbuflow® dense phase and Fluidflow® pipe air slide for new plants, capacity upgrading or modernisation projects. It also provides silo systems and components including control and electrical equipment. Every bulk handling system is custom made to the client’s individual requirements and the company co-operates closely with domestic manufacturing partners and supervises installation work.

Möller is responsible for the engineering and key components and guarantees the equipment functioning as well as the complete system. The company’s extensive experience in handling different bulk materials is additionally supported by performance testing of pneumatic conveying installations in its own test facilities. Möller is certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000.

Möller storage silos

Möller offers engineering and installation for all silo types required by the bulk handling market, ranging from small pre-hoppers up to large silos of 85,000 tons capacity and more. Special distribution systems above and within silos ensure low separation of finest particles (anti-segregation) during silo feeding processes. To minimise energy consumption, the air slide systems for reclaiming/discharging are designed with different aeration areas that are only fluidised in sequence. Reliable silo flow control valves discharge to an air slide or other conveying system.

Möller Turbuflow® dense phase conveying

Wherever feasible, Möller designs pressure vessel conveying systems incorporating the patented Turbuflow® pipe which operates at low velocities and high material/air rates, resulting in low energy consumption. This kind of low velocity dense phase conveying system also means significantly lower levels of wear and tear, avoiding frequent disruptive and costly maintenance work.

Turbuflow® dense phase conveying systems have been on the market for over 20 years. The principle is a conveying pipe with an inner bypass pipe. This ingenious but simple design prevents bulk and air separation during pneumatic conveying.

If a plug forms, pressure loss in the conveying line will be greater at that point. This causes more conveying gas to flow into the inner bypass pipe. However, at the next opening in the bypass pipe the gas will re-enter the conveying pipe. Upon release of the conveying gas, the bulk lump or clot becomes fluidised by local turbulences. This immediately reduces flow resistance. The bulk is thus conveyed compactly, slowly and highly efficiently without any danger of pipe blockages. This process is self-regulating and does not require any control equipment. The Turbuflow® conveying system can even be restarted when the pipe is full. Due to continuous and intensive mixing, high bulk to air ratios will be achieved at low conveying velocities.

Möller also designs pressure vessel systems with standard pipes and the decision as to which type of pipe to use will depend on the transport system.

Möller Fluidflow® pipe air slides

For safe and extremely smooth and attrition-free transportation of fluidisable bulk materials, Möller offers Fluidflow® pipe air slides as well as ordinary air slide systems, with all the ancillary equipment required whether for a small or large capacity installation. A film of fluidised material guarantees effortless movement of material. The moving material becomes fluidised and flows by means of gravity or pressure in terms of a material column only. Möller offers open air slides for silo aeration, flow control valves with metallic sealing for discharge control as well as all additional equipment like fall-out boxes, screen boxes, Y-pieces and so on. Möller Fluidflow®System will also be used for the direct pot feeding of electrolyte cells

Möller Direct Pot Feeding System®

Möller direct pot feeding is an innovative system that ensures constant and reliable feeding of secondary alumina oxide to the electrolyte cells’ ore bunkers. This smooth working transport system combines the Möller Turbuflow® or Möller Fluidflow® transport system from a storage silo to intermediate bins at the electrolyte cells and the Möller Fluidflow® pipe air slide feeding system directly to each of the electrolyte cells. The Turbuflow® dense phase feeding and the Fluidflow® pipe air slide are approved systems that preserve particle size distribution and the flowability of the alumina. Low conveying velocities preserve particle size distribution and the flowability of the secondary alumina while minimising scaling effects. Separation of the main conveying air volume in the intermediate bin avoids feeding secondary alumina from intermediate bins via point feeders into the ore bunker of the electrolytic cell.

This very competitive, effective and efficient system offers reduced wear, reduced maintenance and high operating reliability.
