With its sharpest ever annual rise in the number of passenger movements – a year-on-year gain of 10.4 percent or 3.2 million – Munich Airport in 2007 achieved a new all-time high of 34 million passengers in a year. Thanks to this outstanding growth, Munich succeeded in underpinning its number seven position among Europe’s busiest hubs, and rose from 30th to 28th place in the world rankings. The number of takeoffs and landings also grew, rising 5 percent to almost 432,000. What's arguably most impressive about these results is the sheer speed of growth. With double-digit gains in both the passenger and the cargo sector, Munich Airport clearly outpaced Germany's and Europe's airport industry as a whole.
For a number of years now, airlines have gradually been increasing the size of the aircraft they operate in Munich, and the seat capacity on flights increased yet again in 2007. However, because passenger numbers rose even more rapidly than capacity, the average load factor on services grew to 73.4 percent. At no time previously were load factors as high as in 2007, and the average maximum take off mass (MTOM) rose accordingly by 2.6 metric tons to 63.7 tons.
These impressive growth results not at least because of their professional and flexible Ground Handling Services, which are continuously monitored and altered to shifting needs of their customers and changing safety and security rules and regulations. Due to this fast development to an important hub, the demands of the airlines on their airport operations increased continuously.
Only operators who can reliably manage and control complex ground handling
processes to offer unmatched passenger connecting times and rapid turnarounds
can compete effectively in today's ramp service business. Munich Airport
Business Division Ground Handling committed to delivering processes that
ensure maximum quality and service efficiency in aircraft, baggage and cargo
handling operations.
Munich Airport Ground Handling always gear their products to the wishes and needs of their customers, which means that their operational business cannot afford to stand still and, together with their customers, they always must keep on developing new and innovative products. Airlines now request individualised ground handling procedures with an emphasis on safety, punctuality and customer orientation. Munich Airport Ground Handling has adapted successfully to this new dynamic situation. Their strengths lie in particular in more complex handling products, since Munich Airport has now evolved into a classical hub.
Consequently for all of their efforts they're proud to have received yet another award from London-based aviation researchers Skytrax, who, through a survey of almost 8 million travellers, picked them as the best airport in Europe - for the fourth year in succession.
This outstanding result would not have been possible without smooth and efficient aircraft and baggage handling. In spite of tough competition at Munich Airport, their ground handling business division again performed well in 2007, successfully commanding a market share of nearly 90 percent. With a workforce of around 2,000, they handled almost 356,000 flights, 3.9 percent more than in 2006, and more than 140 airline companies chose to source their ground services with them.
To maintain and improve their high quality standards, work processes are continuously monitored and optimized to accommodate the ever-changing needs of their customers, as well as to ensure full compliance with national security and safety rules and regulations. Munich Airport was the first airport in Germany to gain the Quality Management Certification DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 in 1994, and was successfully recertified in 2008. Their ramp handling staff receives regular training in accordance with JAR-OPS, and ramp handling is performed according to IATA AHM 804.
