When a nuclear plant is considering upgrades to its fuel-handling equipment or outage-critical cranes, PaR Nuclear can provide engineering services to evaluate current performance and make recommendations for performance and reliability improvements. This analysis will provide options for upgrades, the resulting improvements and the associated costs. With this information, a cost-benefit analysis can easily be performed.

During the past 15 years, PaR Nuclear has specialized in improving the performance of fuel-handling equipment for nuclear plants. Moving fuel is a critical-path activity during outages, and to significantly shorten outages, fuel-movement time must be shortened. To reduce fuel-movement time, the fuel-handling equipment performance must be improved. PaR Nuclear specializes in this area. For more than 15 years, we have been successfully applying our Fuel Net® automated control system to meet this need. In that time more than 80 Fuel Net replacement systems have been installed.

PaR Nuclear also specializes in single failure-proof cranes for handling critical loads in nuclear plants.. PaR Nuclear’s division, Ederer Nuclear, manufactures a patented hoisting safety system known as X-SAM, (eXtra Safety And Monitoring), for these demanding applications. X-SAM can be economically installed on existing cranes, as well as on new equipment, from 2 tons to more than 400 tons capacity. A generic license for X-SAM was issued by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission following a submittal of a topical report shortly after in development. The X-SAM system allows a crane to withstand operator- or environment-induced incidents, such as two-blocking, load hang-up, and severe overloads without damaging the hoist drive train or dropping the load. X-SAM is used all over the world in commercial nuclear plants and other applications where safe load handling is critical. Typical applications within nuclear plants include polar cranes and cask- handling cranes.
