Railway Technology International

Overview

A recent study of the railway market, commissioned by UNIFE – The Association of European Railway Industries looked into the growth forecast of this market up to 2015. The total world market for the rail supply industry is estimated at EUR 103 billion with an expected steady annual growth of 2% per year over the next decade, resulting in 20% growth over the next 10 years.Railway Technology International

The rail supply industry is a robust market that will continue to attract steady growth over the next ten years. Whilst the railway sector was not a major priority in the past for most governments, mobility issues, urbanisation, road congestion and environmental concerns, among others, have led to an increased need for railway infrastructure as a means to cope with the needs of growing economies. The study identifies the rail industry as a key partner to support the sustained development of economies around the world

The rail suppliers who manufacture and service all the systems, subsystems and components used in modern urban, conventional and high-speed systems, including rail infrastructure, rolling stock, and signal and telecommunication systems are still reporting steady growth. While a handful of multinational suppliers dominate the headlines, the sector is equally shaped by the hundreds of small and medium-sized suppliers and sub-suppliers.

The study showed that Europe, NAFTA and the Asia/Pacific region are the key markets today. Yet this is a dynamic, ever-changing industry and Eastern Europe is gaining importance, whereas Asia is expected to show higher growth rates, thanks to a rapid economic development in this region. As these countries become more and more prosperous, demand for rail infrastructure and services will develop. Western Europe, however, will remain the single most important rail market, but Asia will show the greatest growth potential.
