SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
The company with the safe on the left runs a fleet of very smart petrol
engined cars.
The proud owners of the safe on the right run a fleet of the same size, but
it consists of Peugeot 406 HDi diesel cars instead.
The difference in their fortunes is best explained by a simple combination
of figures.
To cover 60,000 miles, a typical petrol-powered car, at 34 miles per gallon
(combined) will use 1,765 gallons. And with petrol at £3.60 a gallon
(quoting typical fuel prices at 24th September 2001) covering those miles
will cost £6,354.
With Peugeot HDi, though, the financial picture is very different.
To cover that same 60,000 miles, a Peugeot 406 HDi, at a frugal 50.4 miles
per gallon (combined), uses 1,191 gallons.
And with diesel costing £3.56 a gallon (typical price at 24th September
2001) the cost of travelling the 60,000 miles plummets to £4,240.
That's a difference of £2,114 on the running of just one car. A fleet of a
hundred, therefore, gives a saving of £211,400.
The revolutionary HDi (High Pressure Direct Injection Diesel) engine is a
great leap forward in diesel technology. Common rail diesel technology
brings substantial fuel savings and exceptionally low CO2
emissions.
All of which brings further good news for Smith & Sons plc when it comes to
vehicle taxation.
Under the new emissions based Company Car Taxation rules taking place from
April 2002, all cars are taxed according to a sliding scale of CO2
emissions. The cleaner the engine, the less you pay.
Thanks to the HDi engine's remarkably low emissions, which are down by 20%
on traditional diesels, Peugeot vehicles can bring substantial tax savings
to any fleet.
For example, a driver of a typical 2.5-litre petrol saloon with a CO2
output of 238g/km will have a tax bill of £2,496 in the tax year 2002/3
based on a P11D value of £21,520 and paying tax at 40%. By switching to a
Peugeot 406 Executive 2.2 HDi with the same P11D value but with an ultra low
CO2 of only 168g/km, the tax bill for the same period is only
£1,549. A saving of £947 in one year alone! With a typical ownership period
of three years, the total saving by switching to HDi is £2,840!
The range of HDi engines are available from the fantastic 206 to the
super luxurious 607. Each one is available with a wide range of
specification, so that whatever your fleet requirements, you can be sure
that Peugeot will provide a highly economical diesel that fits the bill.
You'll find that Peugeot also offers plenty of choice when it comes to
cost-effective finance. A Peugeot 406 Rapier 2.0 HDi Saloon costs as little
as £190 per month *(subject to conditions) with Peugeot Contract Hire.
Whether it's for purchase or lease, we have packages designed to help
businesses of all types and sizes make the most of their resources.
All things considered, perhaps Smith & Son plc should think about ordering
another new safe.
