Owners of the largest British real estate company in Bulgaria, Sean Quick
and Sarah-Jane Gouldbourne originally came to Bulgaria to invest in land.
They were amazed at the lack of service and good advice that they left the
country appalled and disappointed, deciding not to purchase anything at
that time.
Upon their return to the UK, they tried a different approach using UK
based agents selling property and land in Bulgaria. The problem was that
these UK based agents were exactly that, based in the UK, and the majority
of them were actually utilising the services of Bulgarian agents! This
resulted in their returning to Bulgaria to source land with the same Agents
that they had originally been sat in front of some months prior on their
first visit.
It became very obvious that the UK based agents in most cases had never
even visited the country, let alone tried to purchase property themselves.
Once again they returned to the UK having purchased nothing.
Frustrated and angry they re-grouped and searched for an alternative. The
solution was to return to Bulgaria once again. This time they started to
research different areas along the Black Sea Coast, visiting many places
from the Turkish border in the South, to the Romanian border in the North.
They gained considerable first hand knowledge and experience with respect to
popularity and price. They studied the buying process in depth and
various other obstacles that were placed before them. After some months they
registered a Bulgarian company and successfully purchased their first plot
of land.
This was very time consuming, expensive and not without some pain along
the way, but at least they had finally secured their objective.
One day whilst in conversation with close friends it was suggested to
them that they establish their own Real Estate Company. Although Sean and
Sarah-Jane had no experience in the Real Estate business either in the UK or
Bulgaria, it was an option that was well worth considering. Two weeks later
their business in the UK was sold and they moved with their three children
to Varna, on the Black Sea Coast.
They started Property Invest Ltd, primarily to source property and land for
family, friends and business colleagues in the UK. This was very successful
and in no time they were getting referrals from all kinds of people. Because
of their experience in Bulgaria they found themselves consulting on land
acquisition, property purchase, visa requirements and a host of other
potential problems for foreigners wishing to either settle or invest in
Bulgaria.
In 2004 they were the first Real Estate Company in Bulgaria to open a
high street office based on a UK agency. A professional modern, comfortable
