Engineering Training

Horizon's relationship with the Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering (DCAE), Defence College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (DCEME) and the Defence College of Communications and Information Systems (DCCIS) enables it to offer state of the art engineering training in the following disciplines:

Aeronautical Engineering

The Defence College of Aeronautical Engineering is headquartered at DCAE Cosford, a centre of excellence in Aeronautical Engineering. As with most defence training sites DCAE Cosford has the facilities and capability to deliver training to the absolute beginner, all the way through to upgrading/refresher training for experienced engineers. All aspects of aeronautical engineering are covered including: airframe maintenance and repair, propulsion systems, on aircraft electrical systems, avionics, weapons systems, survival equipment maintenance and repair, as well as expedient repair. Comprised of training establishments across 5 sites, the DCAE embraces the AE and survival equipment elements of RN training at HMS Sultan (Gosport), the REME School of Electronic and Aeronautical Engineering at Arborfield, the RAF No 1 School of Technical Training at Cosford and specialist RAF Engineering Officer Training at Cranwell.

Mechanical Engineering

The Defence School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering site at MoD St Athan teaches personnel the skills needed to operate, maintain and repair the Ground Support Equipment in use with the RAF. A large range of engineering skills are taught including: Vehicle Mechanical systems, Vehicle Electrical Systems as well basic and advanced Workshop Skills such as: milling and grinding, welding (TIG/MIG/ and Oxy/Acetylene). The ranges of equipment covered are: air conditioners, mobile power generators, light goods vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and temporary electrical installations.

CIS Engineering

The Defence College of Communications and Information Systems, with its Headquarters in Blandford Forum, has first class teaching facilities covering all aspects of modern communication systems. Some of the skills taught here are: Local and Wide Area Secure networks, HF through to SHF radio networks including line of sight and satellite, Infrastructure support utilising both fibre and copper networks and ground RADAR installations. These disciplines are taught through the Royal School of Signals at the following satellite sites: the Royal Navy CIS Training Unit at HMS Collingwood at Fareham in Hampshire and No 1 Radio School at Cosford near Wolverhampton, of which the Aerial Erector School at RAF Digby is a part.

Air Command

Our unique position also gives us access to the Air Command schools based on operational bases around the UK. We can offer both familiarisation and in-depth courses on Typhoon, Tornado, Harrier, VC10, Hercules and any other operational platform or in service Ground Support Equipment.

Air Traffic Control

Central Air Traffic Control School (CATCS) at RAF Shawbury is the leading provider for disciplines of Military Air Traffic Control. The full portfolio of training from the CATCS is available to industry via Horizon Training.

Training Support

Horizon also facilitates access to the Defence School of Training Support (DCTS), which provides training in all areas of the Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) including Train the Trainer, Coaching and Motivation, Training Needs Analysis and Validation of Training.

Aptitude and Leadership

Selecting personnel is often difficult. Over many years the RAF have tuned their selection process to meet the demands of the modern world. Customers can access this expertise through RAF Cranwell, where the facilities offered will assist them in recruiting the right person for the right job, first time.

Environmental Awareness

The Specialist Training School (STS) based at RAF Halton conducts a wide range of training, including Environmental Protection (Pollution Prevention and Control) and Heath and Safety training including Manual Handling.

Bespoke Training Solutions

Occasionally existing course content may not be an exact fit; if this is the case then the highly qualified team of course designers can adapt a course to meet specific customer requirements. Selected courses may also be delivered at the customers premises, reducing the overall cost of training.
