The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is the voice of nursing in the UK. With over 390,000 members the RCN represents nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies.
If you're a nurse, midwife or health care support worker in primary care or public health, the RCN offers a wide range of support and resources available to you for your professional development. With your own specialist primary care and public health forums there's plenty of opportunity as an RCN member to network and share good practice with other nursing professionals. Whether you're a practice nurse, district nurse, health visitor or school nurse there's a forum of professionals you can share information and good practice with. There are also forums covering topics including travel health, sexual health and diabetes. Plus, you'll have access to primary care and public health advisors at national and regional offices.
To keep up to date with the latest developments and research in your area of practice, RCN Events offer professional value for money conferences covering a wide range of topics. The RCN also delivers professional development though its range of leadership programmes such as the RCN Primary Care Leadership Programme.
For your information needs, the RCN has library and local resource centres that members can access in person, or by post, email, fax or phone. The RCN has the largest nursing library in Europe - holding books, journals, theses, videos, articles and guidelines with a range of specialist databases to help you in your information search. A new online resource is the Primary Care and Public Health Zone - an online community to keep you up to date with the fast-moving world of primary care and public health. You can access this information wherever you are and share information with a wide community of nursing professionals.
The RCN is not just about work, it's about your personal well-being too - and we have specialist teams and services to help you with personal matters. You may need advice or counselling on a work injury, work relationships, a difficult career decision, or financial hardship as a result of long-term illness.
The RCN also campaigns on your behalf by influencing policy within primary care and public health. This is done by lobbying politicians and responding to government issues as well as commenting and advising on government policy. Examples include lobbying for more school nurses to be recruited and the granting of additional funding for sexual health clinics. The RCN also campaigns continually on the issues that affect you including pay, bullying, harassment and stress.
As an RCN full member, student or career break member, health care assistant or nurse cadet, you are entitled to legal advice and, in appropriate circumstances, representation on any matter of law that occurs in the course of your employment or while travelling between home and work. It's the sort of help most of us hope we'll never need, but if the unexpected happens it can be invaluable. There's also RCN indemnity insurance which covers you for claims against professional negligence up to £3 million.
Other membership benefits include RCN Direct - our information and advice service available by phone or online. And to make your money go further we've come up with some ways to help. Through RCN Membership Services we can offer you great deals and discounts on products and services, including most of your insurance and financial needs.
