Saab Bofors Dynamics, a business area within the Saab Group, has the competence, technologies and systems that make it a world leader in the area of precision engagement. It is primarily involved in three major defence areas - Missiles, Anti-Armour Weapons and Underwater Systems, which are in service with armies, navies and air forces throughout the world to defend borders and preserve the cause of freedom.

Missile systems
At present we have a number of ongoing international collaboration projects such as, IRIS-T, METEOR, RBS15 Mk3 and TAURUS. Australia will probably decide this year on the procurement of the RBS70 air defence missile system, which is in operation in some fifteen countries worldwide. Preparations for the series production of the BAMSE air defence missile, ordered by Sweden in 2000, are well underway.

Anti-armour and multi-role
In the areas of anti-armour and multi-role systems our order intake is extremely healthy and we are concentrating our efforts on increasing sales of our existing systems. Today, those well-known systems, Carl-Gustaf, AT4 and AT4CS are exported to some forty countries.

Saab Bofors Dynamics is well ahead with the development of MBT LAW (Main Battle Tank Light Anti-armour Weapon). This next-generation, light anti-tank weapon will give the man in action the power to defeat MBTs from any attitude and is based on the technologies of the AT4 CS disposable anti-armour weapon and BILL 2 anti-tank missile system. MBT LAW is under contract to the UK and Sweden and will be in service with the British Army by 2006. A consortium manages the project in which Saab Bofors Dynamics and Thales UK are the dominant partners.

Underwater dominance
Saab Bofors Dynamics has excellent industrial underwater competence regarding shallow water technology. Our main product areas cover torpedoes, ROVs, UUVs and Underwater Data Acquisition Platforms. The heavyweight Torpedo 2000 has advanced thermal propulsion system and both ASW and ASuW capability and can be launched from both submarines and surface vessels. The Double Eagle can place a mine disposal charge within a few centimetres of a mine. Underwater Data Acquisition Platforms are employed for evaluating a minesweep, designing seamine algorithms or for gathering data or signatures from a vessel.

International collaboration
As in many other areas of defence development costs for guided weapons have risen enormously. Few countries outside the U.S. feel they can afford to develop advanced missiles on their own. This has caused many countries, including Sweden, to participate in cross-border missile development projects. Saab Bofors Dynamics, for instance, has developed important parts of the IRIS-T short-range, air-to-air missile that is destined to replace the older U.S. Sidewinder and be carried by Gripen and other fighter aircraft. The development of IRIS-T is a collaborative effort involving five countries. The first missiles are scheduled for delivery this year.

The long-range, all-weather capable Anti-Ship Missile system RBS15 Mk3, which is being jointly produced and marketed by Saab Bofors Dynamics and BGT of Germany, will be operational within the Royal Swedish Navy, the German Navy and the Polish Navy during the same time-frame.

The highly advanced METEOR medium-range missile with beyond visual range capability is another international project involving Saab Bofors Dynamics and the companies of five other countries. METEOR is intended to replace AMRAAM and will equip Gripen, Eurofighter, Rafale and other fighter aircraft.

Saab Bofors Dynamics and LFK of Germany are jointly developing the TAURUS/KEPD350 standoff missile system with the German Air Force as the main customer. TAURUS, which has been successfully tested with the Gripen aircraft fully meets the stringent requirements of the Swedish Armed Forces.

IRIS-T, METEOR, RBS15 Mk3 and TAURUS have good export potential making the future bright for our company.
